A belting warm summer day in St Helens for the Lions!
Grange Park Golf Club was in tip top condition with greens reportedly very swift, and the Lions rolled in at 10 am ready for action.
Captain Bob welcomed the Lion’s and noted that the wind speed would be get up to 20mph from the Northwest later in the day and Lions in those conditions to be mindful of our back 9 holes. They have an unusual feature of being laid a circle around the central inner 9, so nearly all holes consecutively change direction to the prevailing wind direction.
After a bit of lunch and banter, we made first tee at 11 am.
As always the golf , prizes and finance were managed by Geoff with professionalism and precision. Big thank you from all the Lions!
Format for the day was an individual Stableford off the yellow tees and a team game with two best scores on each hole to count.
Team game winners:
Brian Lawlor ( West Lanc’s ), Graham Oakes (Childwall), Paul Jamieson(Heswall) and Mike Johnson (Royal Liverpool).
76 points - congratulations!
Individual Stableford Result:
1st Paul Jamieson (Heswall ) 35 points.
2nd Graham Swaby (Bromborough) 34 points.
3rd Mike Johnson (Royal Liverpool) 33 points.
Our low handicappers from the Wirral, dealt with course and the wind around the back 9 extremely well to come out the pack!
Nearest pin on the 16th Hole was won by David Pennington (Dean Wood), one of our serial winners.
Dinner was very well received by the Lions as a roar could be heard from Lord Derby’s estate as we started our meal. A warm thanks and applause for Kim and her team –the menu being:
Braised Steak Served in a rich red wine sauce served on a bed of creamy chive mash potato and tender stem broccoli
or
Pan Fried Seabass Served on a bed of rocket with soy and ginger accompanied with roasted new potatoes and roasted Mediterranean vegetables
Dessert
Biscoff Cheesecake Served with fresh cream
or
Apple Tart Served with fresh cream
Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec kept the Lions well-watered.
Caffrey’s seemed to go down well during the day and during the evening Captain Mike kept being reminded about his memorable visit to Grange Park several weeks before & 7/6 knockout score, it must have been pure fantasy!
Well done to all for making it another very special day at Grange Park.
The Lions were in fine fettle and plenty fun was had by all, and it was just brilliant to see everyone. We are looking forward to the next one!
Kind regards Bob
