A rain soaked golf course greeted the 2024 lions to Dean Wood. Dave Pennington, the host Captain pondered the state of play with others over breakfast. Flooding greens being the main concern. After taking advice from the course manager and expert weather advisor Chris, 19 brave lions set out from the first tee.
By the time the last group drove off the rain had stopped. Great prediction on the precipitation Chris. The sun soon came out to dry the course up very quickly. The lucky cat's then bathing in the sunshine and having dispensed with waterproofs and brollies, Dean Wood could now be seen in all it's glory. A James Braid designed course that celebrated it's centenary in 2022.
The format of the day was a single Stableford points competition with prizes for the first three places. Two nearest the pins were also to be played for.
Our victorious leader of the pride was our secretary and serial winner Alan James at H & P with a great score of 39 points. A back nine count-back separated host captain Dave Pennington and Peter Hurst of Widnes into 2nd & 3rd places.
Nearest the pins were won by Ken Boniface and the returning lion Bob Hale who had received a warm welcome back to golf earlier by all Captains present. Great to see you back Bob.
However, Bob mustn't have aired his golf shoes yet this season as it appeared that Bob was wearing what can only be described as 'Wigan casino diamonds!' Ah the memories.
We were treated to a fantastic meal by chef Bernard and his team: a very special version of blade of beef bourguignon; individually made apple and pear crumble with custard. Enjoyed by all!
And so, on to Haydock next on the lions tour and the host Captain 'Mexican Steve Worthington'.
