Week of 9/11/2023
What happened last week?
It was a short week with no school on Monday. The team was able to get some important work done, especially on Wednesday when the entire team had a very tough workout.
Some of our runners have also started to assist our Heritage Cross Country program in the afternoon. We value the commitment of these ladies to help our younger generation of runners. This past week Lindsey Clarke, Avery Atkins, Shyla Smith and Sienna Trier all visited with our 4th and 5th grade counterparts to help at their practice.
On Thursday, senior captain Avery Bogdasarian and Coach Lagerquist collaborated to discuss the important topic of the female athlete triad to the team. Avery invested a lot of time and effort into the presentation and the entire team benefited. We are very thankful to both of them for their insights.
On Saturday, the team was split between Rambling Rock and Bath. Race Notes from both races can be found here. You can also find anet results from Bath and Rambling Rock. By the way, if you find these race notes valuable, any pictures you take can be shared with the entire team - it's where a lot of pictures for Race Notes are pulled from.
What's happening this week (if you read nothing else, please read this section)?
Monday - normal practice at 3pm
Tuesday - pre meet practice and pasta dinner at the Cook's house. Details about the pasta dinner can be found here.
Wednesday - Race Day - Jambo 1 in Bedford!! Race times are 4:30pm for varsity and 5:30pm for open athletes. Details about the race can be found here (includes course map and parking info).
Important: Athletes participating in the open race will have a bus to this meet. The bus will leave the high school at 3pm and will be shared with the boys. We will talk about this at practice on Monday. Varsity athletes will travel with Coach Stern and a parent.
Thursday - normal practice at 3pm
Friday - normal practice at 3pm
Saturday - New Huron Boston Invitational at Willow Metropark. Race Times are 9:05 for varsiy and 10:40 for the open race. There will be a bus for this meet leaving at 7am from Saline Middle School. Please note the important bus departure location due to the Chadtough race taking place at the high school.
While we are the park, athletes in both the Saline Middle School and Heritage programs will also be competing. We will plan to cheer them on while we are there.
Looking a little further ahead......
Week of 9/18 we will have regular practice all week with no mid-week meets.

Week of 9/4/2023
What happened last week?
School started!!! To commemorate the start of school, we made last week a down week. That just means we dropped our mileage a bit (but not the intensity) so everyone can get settled into their new routine.
Tuesday was our first race of the season. Saline won the varsity and open races. Laney Alig and Rebecca Rummel also claimed individual victories. More on the race here and full results on anet. Pictures from the meet can be found here.
Thursday we had a hard workout for all three training groups.
Friday, no school, no practice but we did ask everyone to do a recovery run on their own.
What's happening this week (if you read nothing else, please read this section)?
Monday - No school, no practice. but athletes should do posted workouts.
Tuesday - Thursday - normal practice.
Friday - Normal pre-meet workout for athletes running at Rambling Rock. Athletes running at Bath will leave in team vehicles immediately after school and complete pre-meet at Bath.
Saturday - This is the first time this season that we will have a split squad. We have 7-10 athletes that will be traveling to Bath, MI for the Bret Clements Bath Invitational. The rest of the team will be racing at Rambling Rock at Willow Metropark.
Those athletes racing at Bath will be notified after practice on Tuesday. Details about the travel schedule will be sent to parents/guardians that evening. Athletes going to Bath will leave the high school at 3pm on Friday.
Athletes racing at Rambling Rock will leave from Saline High School via bus at 7:30am. The varsity race (top 10 athletes) is at 9:30am and the open race is at 10:50am. Please note that travel to Willow Metropark via I-275 is impacted by construction. I recommend traveling to the park via Willow Road. It's a nice drive this time of year and easy to enter the park directly from Willow Road. If you don't have a park pass, it will ease entry for you (and those behind you) if you bring $10 cash for the entry fee. Details about the meet can be found here. Please make sure to read the information, especially the letter about the construction.
The Captain's parents have asked me to pass along this link for snacks. Thank you in advance for signing up to contribute to post meet snacks. Find instructions and what is needed HERE.
As previously posted, pictures from meets and other team events will be posted here. Assistance is needed to make sure we have pictures of all athletes and it's really easy to do, even if you have a flip phone! Kathy Gage can provide easy to follow instructions for uploading photo's you take.
Week of 8/28/2023
Important Note: Transportation to and from weekday meets will be a challenge this year. We're going to see that this week with our meet at Milan. Buses are not available to transport athletes to weekday events until 5pm or later. This timing allows the drivers to perform their core function - transporting kids to and from school. Unfortunately, a 5pm departure does not work for our meet in Milan this week so the girls will not have a bus. More detail below on the Milan meet.
What happened last week?
Monday the entire team had a very tough workout. Everyone did really well - I expect the results of those efforts will start to show up this week and beyond.
Tuesday was picture day and a recovery day and Wednesday was a pre-meet day.
Thursday, was supposed to be our first race in Birch Run. Unfortunately, weather, and ultimately the meet managers, had other plans. Saline withdrew from the event and 24 hours later they moved the race to this week. Saline will NOT be participating in the rescheduled meet. Instead, most of the team met at 7:30am (there was an option for 3pm as well, to which 2 very committed runners attended) for a long run. It was a humid day and the team, once again, did a very nice job of adapting to schedule change and working together on the long run. Beyond the obvious training benefits, long runs are where we see that team camaraderie strengthen.
What's happening this week (if you read nothing else, please read this section)?
Monday - First day of School!! The team will meet in our meeting room at 3:00pm for practice (pre-meet). After practice, Coach Lagerquist needs some volunteers to help move pole vault mats at the track.
Tuesday - Milan Puddle Jumper Invitational (This link has all of the information, including a course map and parking information). Race times are 5pm for varsity and 6:05pm for open. Make sure you have your jerseys for this race.
The following will run varsity and need to arrive in Milan by 3:45pm - Kate Munson, Laney Alig, Corynn Gady, Mackenzie Sellenraad, Sophie Roth, Grace Oberski and Nancy Gage. There is a chance that they may allow more than 7 in the varsity race. If that occurs, impacted athletes will be notified individually.
All other athletes should arrive no later than 4:45pm and will race at 6:05pm.
Awards are at 7:15pm - all athletes are asked to stay through the end of the awards ceremony.
Wednesday, meet at team room at 3pm for recovery run.
Thursday, meet at team room at 3pm for hill workout on XC course.
Friday (and Monday 9/4), no school, no practice but workouts will be posted for those days.
Week of 8/21/2023
Important Note: Due to Nike discontinuing our jersey's athletes will need to purchase a new jersey this year. It's nice that the head track coach, Coach Lagerquist, is also a cross country coach. This new jersey will be used for both cross country and track. There are 2 styles of jersey - loose and tight - and they can be purchased here. We have the jersey's in the office so your athlete can try one on for sizing before you buy. Please make sure this jersey is purchased before our pictures on 8/22/2023. Along with this jersey, your athlete will need a pair of navy running shorts in a style comfortable to them. If purchasing this jersey presents a hardship, please reach out to Coach Stern for scholarship availability.
What happened last week?
We had a very challenging practice on Monday and long run on Wednesday. We knew the team was going into our time trial without optimal rest. That's okay, we were all racing with the same level of rest.
Matt Barnes gave a presentation to the team on Tuesday regarding reducing anxiety prior to a race. His message was on point and from what I observed on Friday evening, it had a positive impact.
Friday we had our time trial. I'm going to start a page on our site of race notes - I will cover the time trial there. In short, our team ran great! I'm not nearly as eloquent as Coach Spina, but I will do my best to live up to the expectations he sets with the boy's coverage.
As I started to write this, 22 of the team members were at Saline ATA for a self-defense class. Many thanks to Grace Oberski for suggesting this!
What's happening this week (if you read nothing else, please read this section)?
8/21 - 7:30am practice at the high school. Those planning to run in spikes need to bring them to practice - preferably set up for track work. We will also be assigning athletes to training groups on this day based on time trial results. Training group assignments are fluid and can be adjusted as the season continues.
8/22 - Picture Day. Pictures are scheduled for 8am but athletes need to be at practice at 7:30am so we can immediately be ready for pictures. Practice will likely go long this day as we still need to run.
8/23 - 7:30am practice at the high school. This will be a pre-meet practice and will be relatively short.
8/24 - No morning practice (shakeout run for those who need it on their own) - We have our first meet at Birch Run. The bus leaves at 1:30PM. This means that the bus will be leaving the high school at 1:30PM athletes should plan to be there no later than 1:20PM if they have everything they need and do not need to enter the school. All athletes are expected to ride the bus to/from each meet. If there are extenuating circumstances, coaches must be informed 24 hours beforehand.
8/25 - 7:30am optional practice at the high school.
Week of 8/14/2023

Clothing store - Some have asked about a clothing store. We are working on a team order. In the interim, and really any time of the year, you can purchase items from this team store. The password to enter is "hornets".
What happened last week:
We had our first official practice of the 2023 XC season. We currently have 49 athletes on the roster, including our latest addition, Maerta, an exchange student from Sweden (she is a senior!).
We had some great workouts last week - track work on Monday, long day on Wednesday and hills on Friday. Our team is going into the season in great shape.
We had a fantastic team building session with the middle school cross country team on Thursday. It was a great opportunity to have some fun with new teammates. We will be cheering our middle school counterparts on all year.
Saturday was the Saline Summerfest 5k, the team's fundraiser. The team was amazing on the course - whether they ran the race or volunteered, we had great reviews. We had a record number of registered runners (289) which broke our previous record of 202. We appreciate all of our sponsors, donors and the family support that helped this event be so successful. Special shout out to Grace Youngs who ran a time that is 1:23 faster than her best XC time - way to go Grace! There are over 800 pictures of the race here.
What's ahead for the week of 8/14:
8/14/2023 - practice at Saline High School - 7:30am
8/15/2023 - practice at Saline High School - 7:30am
Special Presentation (Optional) - Reducing Anxiety Prior to Running a Race - 10:30am Saline High School - Room C222 - Matt Barnes is a Licensed Masters of Social Work who is starting his 25th year as a public school social worker. He is currently in Ann Arbor Public Schools and also sees clients in private practice. Matt is the founder of the Saline Run Club, a resident of Saline and a great person. We appreciate the time he is taking to present this information to both the girls' and boys' programs.
8/16/2023 - practice at Saline Middle School Track - 7:30am. We will tour the time trial course during this practice.
8/17/2023 - practice at Saline High School - 7:30am - this will be a quick practice. I expect to be done by 8:30am
8/18/2023 - No morning practice. Meet and Greet and Time Trial at Saline Middle School Track. Athletes should arrive no later than 6:30pm and will race at 7:30pm. Boys will race at 7pm. This event will also be a meet and greet for families. Important information about the events of this day can be found here. The schedule and course map and volunteer signup is a great way to get to know this event
8/19/2023 - Optional self defense class at Saline ATA. This event was requested by one of our athletes and she has taken the time to put everything together. Athletes interested in attending can sign up here. The team will cover the cost of this training.
A little further ahead:
8/22 - team pictures at 8am, practice after. Everyone should still be at practice by 7:30am
8/24 - first meet of the season at Birch Run
Week of 8/7/2023
If you have not done it already, please register for XC on Big Teams. If the pay-to-participate fee is an issue for your family, there are scholarships available. If your daughter applies for and is denied financial assistance through the athletic department, please contact Coach Stern for other options.
This week we begin mandatory practices. We will be practicing Monday - Friday at 7:30am. We usually meet at the high school but occasionally move around in the district. If we are moving to a different location, we will let everyone know at practice and will also note it in the workout doc. This Thursday, 8/10/2023, we will start practice at 8am and join our middle school team at the high school for a fun run together. Please note this change.
If your daughter is not able to attend practice, they need to email the coaches to let us know.
August 12th is our team fundraiser, the Saline Summerfest 5k, athletes in town are racing or helping with the event. Parents, we also need your help with this one. We've had to change our course a little and could use some adult volunteers by City Hall. If you're available from 8am - 10am on 8/12 and would like to donate some time to the team, please sign up here.
We're getting new uniforms (pictured above). Stay tuned for information about how you can purchase this new top. Please note, we will use the same top for track. If purchasing a uniform presents a hardship, please contact Coach Stern.
During the month of August, Ann Arbor Running Company is offering 20% off purchases. See this flyer for more info
We had a great presentation about eating disorders in athletes from Rachael Steil on Thursday. I was very pleased to see such a large turnout from our team.
Our competition calendar can be found here. Please note just to the right of the schedule you have the option to download the calendar in several formats.
8/8/2023 - Parent meeting in the high school commons at 6pm. This is optional. Please note that Coach Spina (the boys' head coach) will lead this discussion. Coach Harrison will also attend. Coach Stern is out of town for work that evening. (agenda)
Check out this Handbook for New XC Parents.
It is possible to do cross country and marching band. Our seniors that have experience balancing both will help our new athletes.
Week of 7/31/2023
Last week, we had a visit from school record holder Jessi Larson (photo above, Jessi is in the sunglasses). She shared some great information with the team about how to approach racing, working hard (in academics and athletics) and the benefits of that hard work being realized. Jessi just graduated from University of Michigan and is heading to PT school at Washington University in St. Louis this week. It was great to have her visit.
This is the last week of conditioning. To continue to practice with the team, starting Monday 8/7, athletes will need to be signed up for cross country through Big Teams and have a valid physical (dated after 4/15/2023) on file. Please note, all "paperwork" needs to be handled via Big Teams. Please do not send copies of physicals to practice with your athlete.
This is also a strange week by MHSAA standards. As coaches, we are not allowed to provide a time and distance to athletes this week. We can give a time or we can give a distance, but not both. You will see that reflected in the workout document this week (if you follow things that closely).
8/3/2023 - Rachael Steil will be presenting to athletes and parents/coaches regarding eating disorders in athletes. Attendance is not mandatory, but I do highly encourage that our athletes and parents acquaint themselves with this topic. It's an important enough presentation that we have invited others' from outside our community to attend. It's free to attend, we just ask for sign ups here.
8/5/2023 - Alumni run at Mill Pond Park. If you ran XC for Saline High School, you are welcome to attend (I know there are a few parents on this list which is AWESOME). Please sign up here - it's free!.
Camp Pictures (and other pictures throughout the season) can be found at this page. There's a lot. Many thanks to the Gage family for arranging all of these pictures - it's great to have all of these events documented.
A lot of parents are asking about their summer vacation plans that conflict with the start of the season. I have good news. The following is from our Team Rules:
Family Vacations
If an athlete misses practice because of family vacation, it will be excused with the following stipulations.
- The athlete must be on a family vacation and not absent because of involvement in other extra-curricular activities.
- The athlete must notify their coach by email of the expected dates of absence well in advance.
- While away, the athlete must maintain basic fitness.
- The athlete will keep a training log while away.
- An athlete may be required to complete 9 or more practices with the team before participating in any competition, time trial, or scrimmage.
Check out the Captain's Corner on our website. The captain's have been hard at work creating content that will be helpful to athletes and parents throughout the season.
During the month of August, Ann Arbor Running Company is offering 20% off purchases. See this flyer for more info.
Beyond this week:
8/7/2023 - Mandatory practice begins. We will meet at 7:30am at either the athletic entrance to the high school or in the wrestling room. Eventually, we will move to the afternoon's but not immediately.
8/8/2023 - Parent meeting in the high school commons at 6pm. This is optional. Please note that Coach Spina (the boys' head coach) will lead this discussion. Coach Harrison will also attend. Coach Stern is out of town for work that evening.
8/11/2023 - Summerfest set up. Each year, the team helps set up the tables and chairs for the Summerfest event downtown. For our efforts, the Summerfest committee makes a donation to the program.
8/12/2023 - The Summerfest 5k presented by Ann Arbor Running Company and Trinity Health IHA Medical Group / Probility. This is our teams only fundraiser. We ask the team to either run or work at the race. Coach Harrison will be coordinating our volunteers and will discuss with the team as we approach the race. Donations to the team can also be made here - 97% of the donation made this way goes directly to the team.
Week of 7/24/2023
We're back from camp - our athletes all reported that they had a great time. Coach Harrison and I enjoyed the day we got to spend there.
I let the team know this morning that Coach Rogan is stepping away from cross country. Earlier this summer, Coach Rogan was offered (and accepted) a full time teaching position at the high school. This is a great opportunity for her and an even bigger win for Saline High School. As Coach Rogan begins this part of her career, she has decided it will be best to step back from coaching cross country so that she has ample time to focus on her family and her new teaching responsibilities. While we will miss seeing her every day, we know that she will be at many of our meets and will definitely be making guest appearances to teach the occasional dance fit class.
On Thursday, we will have a time trial for our athletes that are in town. This is just a chance for the coaches to see where we are with our training and to assess any adjustments we need to make as we get into the final few weeks of summer conditioning.
Please don't forget to sign up for cross country this fall. We will need your runner signed up and a physical submitted by 8/6/2023 so they can start practice on 8/7/2023. You can get your physical at Saline on 7/26 but please make sure you sign up (link below).
Reminders:
The Garmin sale ends on Friday. If your athlete needs a device, please order here.
The Rachael Steil presentation is on 8/3/2023 and is now scheduled for 3:00 - 4:00 for athletes and 4:30-5:30 for parents. More information can be found here.
Also on 8/3, a Tracksmith 5k will be taking place at the Saline High School track. This will be a fun event to watch (or run).
The Summerfest 5k presented by Ann Arbor Running Company and Trinity Health IHA Medical Group / Probility is on 8/12/2023. This is our teams only fundraiser. We ask the team to either run or work at the race. Coach Harrison will be coordinating our volunteers and will discuss with the team as we approach the race.
7/1/2023 - Fall sports registration has launched - Registration for fall sports begins through BigTeams
7/26/2023 - Sports physicals offered at Saline (make sure you reserve a spot if going this route.)
Week of 7/17/2023
It's camp week, arguably the most favorite week of the summer for many of our athletes. Most of our runners will be leaving from the auditorium side of the high school on Monday morning to spend Monday - Thursday at Warren Dunes. This camp was started over 30 years ago and has been key in extending relationships on the team beyond running. It is truly one of the reasons that our program experiences the success that we do.
New!

Do you or your runner need a Garmin? Garmin has provided some great pricing for us. We have hand selected what we feel are the best (and most reasonable) deals. If you would like one, please complete this form. We will keep this sale open until 7/28. We will close that order and likely place another order just before school starts.
Please note we have added a meet to the calendar on 8/24/2023 in Birch Run. We've never been there before - the course looks like a good one judging from recent results.

Week of 7/3/2023
This past week, we heard from 2 athletes currently working through low iron and ferritin levels. During the week, I have added several articles to our website that are worthwhile reads.
We had to cancel conditioning on Wednesday due to air quality issues. Thursday we held practice but worked on indoor activities. We use this site to determine if we will have practice or not. When we cancel practice, we will do so via email and Remind. You can join Remind at this link.
This week, 7/3/2023 - 7/9/2023 is the MHSAA mandated dead week. There will be no coach led practices this week. Captains may be leading practices and will communicate directly with athletes.
XC Camp is 7/17 – 7/20. There are only 10 spots left between the boys and girls teams so I would not delay long if you still plan to sign up.
A few new items:
7/1/2023 - Fall sports registration has launched - Registration for fall sports begins through BigTeams
7/26/2023 - Sports physicals offered at Saline (make sure you reserve a spot if going this route.)
Don't forget:
8/7/2023 - mandatory practices begin
8/12/2023 - The Summerfest 5k presented by Ann Arbor Running Company and Trinity Health/IHA Cares. This is our main fundraiser.
Week of 6/26/2023
I know it’s a busy time of year so I am going to revert to bullet points. Please consider all of this information very important. Also, all of this information (and more) is on the girls cross country website.
Monday, 6/26/2023, two current athletes will be addressing the team about their recent experience with low iron and ferritin levels. Along with hearing this information, we are going to refer to this document created by Coach Eileen. As we are approaching the time when many families are scheduling physicals, I think this information is very timely. Please take the time to review this document – it’s packed full of helpful material. The “links” section of our website has this and more.
XC Camp is 7/17 – 7/20. If your athlete wants to sign up and be guaranteed a shirt in their size, please register here by 6/26/2023. There are only 28 spots left between the boys and girls teams so I would not delay long.
8/3/2023, Friends of Saline Cross Country is sponsoring a presentation by Rachael Steil on Mind, Body, Food and Culture – Eating Disorders in Athletes. It is not mandatory that athletes attend, but it will be highly encouraged. There will be 2 free presentations – both will be open to all programs in the area – not just athletes and not just Saline.
8/12/2023 is our annual fundraiser - the Saline Summerfest 5k. If athletes are in town that weekend, they are expected to either work or run in the race. You can register, or make a donation, here. We appreciate the support we receive to run our program.
The week of 7/3/2023 is “dead week” so we will not have practice and I will not be sending an email. During dead week coaches are not allowed to communicate workouts or any other type of instruction to athletes. In fact, outside of incidental community contact (if we see an athlete at DQ), coaches are not to communicate with athletes at all.
