Jambo 3! This race is run on one of the most storied courses in SEC history. There have been a lot of meets on the "north course" at Hudson Mills Metropark. Many of our alumni have fond memories of their time here (and some showed up to support the team - thank you!) Piper Rognes' mom, Becky, was there to support her daughter and also remember her own journey's on this course. With the KLAA conference combining to the SEC next year, this may have been our last SEC Championship meet at Hudson Mills as we may have outgrown this location. More to come on that in the ensuing months.
Our top 7 athletes started the day off for us with somer great runs. We finished 3rd behind Michigan #1 (and USA #4) TTUN and Michigan #2 Skyline. We were 6 points behind Skyline - we're closing that gap in each meet. Our first three athletes all ran their fastest times ever on this course. Kate Munson finished 4th overall in 18:19, Savannah Staton was 6th in 18:32 and Addie Turck clocked an impressive 19:16.
Sophie Roth was all smiles after her impressive 20:22. She took a chance at the beginning of the race and it paid off. We're really proud of what this captain/senior accomplished for the day.
LT was our 5th finisher in 20:51 - another impressive performance for her. Both she and Sophie heard the coaches challenge that we needed runners 4 and 5 closer to 3. They closed the gap considerably when it mattered most.
Michelle Jiang was next to finish in 21:38. She was followed by freshman Ella Myers in 22:05. This was Ella's first time in the varsity lineup having earned that right based on her performance the week before. She raced well and showed us that the future of Saline XC is very bright.
Ruby Giddings led all Hornets in the open race. Her 7th place finish was a huge PR of 20:56 - her first time sub 21. The sophomore is putting it all together! The open runners also finished 3rd as a team to Skyline and TTUN.
Addie McGee, Caroline Cotner, Ellery Toth (2 freshmen and a sophomore) were the next to cross the line. They were followed by seniors and captains, Mia Washington and Payton Aagesen. Piper Rognes rounded out the scoring positions running an impressive 23:26 around the same course as her mom ran just a few years ago.
Isy Driver ran a PR of 23:51 on this challenging course. This was her first time under 25 minutes.
Jenna Sweet had an impressive kick going sub 26 for the first time in 25:50.
Lola Jambon went sub 27 for the first time ever in a PR of 26:56
Senior/Captain Elizabeth Giles made her final trip around this course with a smile on her face. She has been such a great leader of this team and the Heritage program. We're going to miss her next year. She may also have the distinction of being the final Saline athlete, girl or boy, to finish an SEC race on this course. There are many who have run on this course and it feels fitting to have Elizabeth be the one to "turn out the lights" if this is to be our last Jambo 3 at Hudson Mills.
After the meet, Coach Lagerquist led the team in some reflection about the season, what the future holds beyond running and the infamous leaf talk. She always knows the right words to say and it's always a very special moment for athletes and coaches.
The post season crew is running at Regionals and PROM on 10/31 at Lake Erie Metropark. We hope you will come out to support the team!
