Regionals and PROM 2025, one of the most beautiful days we have experienced along the shores of Lake Erie at the metropark that bears the name of this lake. This is not normally a fast course, but we saw quite a few PR's on this gorgeous day.
Regionals
The 7 athletes we put on the line for the Regional Championship had a big challenge ahead of them. We know TTUN is a formidable opponent, but we could also not overlook Woodhaven Brownstown. They have been running competitively all year long. The athletes met this challenge head on - we took second to TTUN and are headed back to the MHSAA State Championships at MIS for the 28th consecutive year.
It came together at the front of the race. Savannah Staton led the team with a strong 4th place finish in an amazing PR of 17:55 - her first sub 18 trip and putting her in 3rd place on the all time sophomore list. Senior/Captain Lilli Schlack finished in 6th place with a time of 18:51, she was followed by Addie Turck in 19:14 and Kate Munson in 19:18. Caroline Cotner joined her teammates in the "sub 20" club running a 19:58 and cementing a deal she had with her family. LT was the 6th Hornet finisher in 20:33. She was followed by Sophie Roth in 20:40.
This is the fastest this group of seven has run all year. It was a great start to the day. To say we were excited is an understatement.
PROM
Eight athletes went to the line for Saline in the post regional open meet. They improved upon what we felt was an excellent performance from the regional athletes. Of the eight athletes, 5 ran PR's and one ran a season best (which I really consider to be a PR). Woah!!
Senior/Captain Jillian Hayes led the team with an impressive 20:25. To put that in perspective, this is the fastest Jillian has run since her freshman year and almost a full minute improvement over her previous fastest time this season. Way to go, Jillian!!
Payton Aagesen had the breakthrough race we have all been expecting. Her 20:46 PR was 40 seconds faster than her previous mark. She was followed by Ruby Giddings in a PR of 21:40. Captain/Senior Hannah Gritzmaker ran a PR by 0.2 seconds to finish her high school career with a PR of 21:42.2 (that kick mattered!!) Sophomore Michelle Jiang finished in 16th place with a PR of 21:50. She was followed by junior Mia Washington with a 21:59 - breaking the 22:00 mark for the first time!! Addisen Freeburn who is just returning to the lineup crossed the line in 49th place.
Our last runner across the line had the gutsiest performance of the day. Mahalia Staton suffered an injury on the course but insisted she was going to complete the race no matter what it took. She willed herself to the finish line, encouraged by her teammates spread out along the final stretch. She was met with hugs, tears and encouragement by all of her teammates and fans. She showed this team what "grit" looks like and we are so impressed with her resolve to see the race through to the finish. Way to go, Mimi!!
It was a great day at Lake Erie Metropark. We look forward to carrying these successes through to the state meet next week at MIS. The girls race at 2:10pm. We hope everyone will be out there to cheer for the team!
