Last week, we hosted the inaugural Saline Campus Invite. The girls raced a formidable squad from Ann Arbor Huron and our neighbors to the south, Milan High School. Coach Spina and I went out the day before and re-measured the course, cutting a few spots here and there, to make the course a true 5k (down from 5.15-5.2k at the time trial).
Kate Munson led all Saline athletes to the finish. Kate was running a tempo workout as she eases into racing for the season. It was fun to "talk" to her throughout the race and learn that she was feeling great. With 800 meters to go, Kate was given the "go ahead" to run the last 800 meters hard. She did so, finishing in a 20:48, just a touch slower than an all out race she ran last year at Milan. We cannot wait to see what Kate does this year.
Some of our other athletes were given some assignments for the day. Specifically, we were actively working on developing Kylie Warner, Captain Lizzie Thibeault and Mia Washington. All three of these athletes have worked incredibly hard this summer and they have a great opportunity to push forward and run faster times. The team rallied around these 3 to give them the support they needed to achieve those faster times.
Kailyn Austin had a good race on Thursday during which she worked hard to overcome some challenges she faced in the time trial. She did a nice job of managing the course and finished in 34th place overall with a time of 26:42
There are few things that are a constant about cross country running. The course changes, the weather changes and our competition changes. One thing we always talk about is managing what we can control - ourselves. No one on this team does that better than Captain Sienna Trier. I have looked through many pictures of Sienna and her teammates over the years. One thing that is a constant is that Sienna always has a smile on her face. That enthusiasm is contagious and you can see it here in Claire Oberski, Olivia Lewis and Ishani Deswal. Sienna's leadership on and off the course is incredibly powerful for our team.
At the finish line, runners were treated to ice cream from Christina's Sweet Treats and More. The response to that additional benefit at the finish line was resoundingly positive. We will probably bring that back for next year.
The coaches are very happy with the work that athletes got done on Thursday. We're excited to watch some of our younger athletes continue to gain racing experience. We're next in action in Milan at the Puddle Jumper Invite which has been rescheduled to Thursday, August 29th. Varsity will race at 5:30pm and the open runners will run at 6:10pm.
