We've now reached that point in the season where the group running is a little smaller and the end of the season is close. Fortunately for our team, we have talked all year long about how the 51 athletes on the team propel the seven that will ultimately toe the line at the state meet forward. We had great support yesterday at the MHSAA Regional Championships and PROM races from athletes like Shelby Fordeck and captain Lucy Woehlke who came to support the program. We were also lucky to have alum Mia Rogan present to support her sister and the rest of the team. It takes a team effort to get this far and we appreciate the support we have received throughout the season from parents, athletes and alumni.
MHSAA Regional
The team ended up in 2nd place with a trip to the state meet to show for their efforts. A great week of training really paid off as we raced well at Lake Erie Metropark (minus the iconic hill which is under construction).
Laney continued to lead the Saline team on the course. She also started a trend that we would see from 1/2 of the seniors who raced on Saturday - she ran a PR of 18:18! She finished 2nd overall and was all-region for her efforts.
Lilly was the next Hornet across the line in 19:02, she was followed by Corynn in 19:22. Both earned all region honors for their outstanding efforts on the day.
Nancy was our 4th finisher with an always steady performance at 19:41. A few short weeks ago, Nancy had not broken the 20 minute barrier, now it's a regular thing. She was 5 seconds shy of her PR. Nancy was followed by Sophie in 19:48. That's the 5 scoring positions for the team all under 20 minutes!
Abby (20:02) and Grace (20:53) rounded out the top 7 for the day. Both of these ladies had gutsy races today and we have seen significant improvement from them over the course of this season.
All seven of these ladies did their jobs and earned that trip to the state championships. As Laney told me at the beginning of the season, the state meet is the best meet, you've done all the work to get there, there is no need to be nervous, you're there, just go out and have fun with 6 teammates.
PROM
As with the varsity group, the athletes who competed in the PROM also finished in 2nd place.
Madi led the way for this group with a 20:34, good for 6th place overall. This was a good effort for Madi and the coaches are happy to see her progress in 2023.
Madi was followed by Grace O in 20:52 and Mackenzie in 20:57. Lizzie was the next across the line in a season best 21:06 - this junior has put in a lot of hard work this season and it has shown in these last few races. Bailey rounded out the top 5 running a 21:17.
Senior/Captain Rebecca Rummel was the 6th Hornet to finish. She ran a PR 21:31 in what is likely her last race for Saline (she is an alternate on our state team). It was obvious from the begininng that Rebecca had a PR on her mind and she went out and got it done. Jill Hayes followed Rebecca across the line with a season best 21:42.
Senior Neva Rognes rounded out the trend of senior PR's running a 22:14 - good for a 7 second PR. Not only is she fast on the course, she is also a National Merit Semifinalist. Way to go, Neva!
Sophomore Riley Provost was the next Hornet to finish in a time of 22:16 - she has had a great season. Dual sport athlete, Mara McClellan was the next Saline runner in 22:37. Kylie Warner was not far behind in 23:00, good for 31st in a very competitive field. Freshman Mia Washington rounded out her season with a 23:13 - we see good things from her in the future. Avery Bogdasarian slipped and fell on the course and still managed to finish with a strong time of 24:18.
We're pleased with these races. Saline athletes continue to rise to the level of the competition and perform strongly in their races.
We hope you will join us for the state meet send off on Friday, November 3rd at 4:45pm and the MHSAA State Championships on Saturday November 4th at 2:10pm for the girls and 3:30pm for the boys.
