Jambo 3 - the SEC championship! We had some work ahead of our varsity group coming into this race. TTUN is ranked first in the state and Skyline is 7th. We have the pieces we need to compete, but we have to put them all together on the same day.
As a team, we took 3rd which solidified our 3rd place finish in the conference. It's a position in which we do not often find ourselves. That's how deep the conference has become. TTUN is typically strong but Skyline has been building their program for the last few years under the guidance of Mike and Serena Kessler. Those of you who are older Saline alum may recognize that name. Mike ran for Saline back in the 1980's.
Savannah Staton finished in 4th with a time of 18:30, she was followed by Lilli Schlack in 18:48. Addie Turck finished in 15th to claim an all conference position in 19:42. She was followed by LT who ran darn close to a PR on a course that does not offer many of those. Sophie Roth (20:42), Caroline Cotner (20:54) and Mimi Staton (21:13) rounded out our top 7.
In the open race, we took 3rd overall, behind TTUN and Skyline (a sign we will have to contend with them over the next few years).
Kate Munson was the champion of the open race running 20:14. She led from the start and never let up.
In her final race in a Saline jersey, Captain Riley Provost ran a PR of 21:36 AND she outkicked 2 athletes from TTUN!!
For the last 2 seasons, Marissa Salazar has saved her best for last. She sprinted to the line in a PR of 23:00 - a 6 second improvment on her PR at this same course last year.
She did it again!! In every race this year, Lola has run a PR. She did it in her final race running a 23:14. Her final kick was impressive!
Catherine Kniffin finished in 48th place with a PR of 23:24.
Jenna Sweet ran under 27:00 for the first time with a 26:21. That's a 1 minute improvement on her previous best and a 5 minute improvement since the beginning of the year.
Ellie PR'd, again! She's had a lot of those this year, a testament to how hard she works. She ran 26:38.
Moira Laundree is one of the quietest athletes on the team. Don't let that fool you though, she works hard and that hard work paid off with a 29 second PR of 27:30
Dylan and Natasha, as they have all season, finished together. They were the final Saline runners to cross the finish line in this race. Look at those smiles!
I have to finish these race notes with a shout out to 2 of our captains who have run together all season - Ruthie Bonfiglio and Ayla Stager. They probably weren't aware of it during the race, but they were competing for a very important place - 67th. Ayla was able to outlean (backwards??) Ruthie for the honor - Ruthie finished in 66th place. 😀
We're really proud of all of the Saline athletes and how they have competed this season. We have 14 athletes who will be moving into the post season. We race Regionals at Lake Erie Metropark on 10/25. The varsity race is at 11:00am and the open race is at 1:00pm. We hope to see you there!
