TEAM!!!!!!!
We were in action at our very own invitational at Saline. It was a complete team effort. The girls won the meet overcoming competitors from Royal Oak, Bedford and Grosse Ile. The boys also won the meet to complete the sweep for the day. The team win was only a small part of all the great work we saw during the day.
The entire team ran in one race. A few athletes were asked to help teammates to achieve certain goals. They did so quite well. The racing athletes performed admirably.
Lauren Tomaszewski (LT) was the first Saline finisher in 20:45 (3rd place). Fellow sophomore Carolne Cotner finished in 5th running 21:18. Captain and Senior Sophie Roth was 7th in 21:28.
Michelle Jiang was the 4th Hornet to cross the line. In her first race of the season, she had an amazing result. A 21:32 PR good for 8th place overall. At this same race a year ago, Michelle ran 23:44 - that's a major improvement for this runner!
Freshman Addie McGee was 11th overall in a PR of 22:06. She had an amazing race - she was consistently working forward and you could see her confidence growing the further she was in the race.
Isabelle Calati finished in 22:12 - a PR! a full one minute PR!. The sophomore has been working hard this summer and that work is coming to fruition
Ella Myers dipped under 23 minutes for the first time, running a PR of 22:54. The freshman has been impressive this season.
Mixed in among these athletes were Payton Aagesen (22:26) and Ruby Giddings (23:02). They both had some mid race struggles but had their teammates by their side to support them to the finish. One of those teammates told me that seeing Ruby and Payton finish was one of the most impressive things she has seen. Nice work, ladies!
Ellery Toth ran to a PR of 23:40, improving upon her performance at Lamplighter (and staying upright in the process).
Addy Irish-Rogers burst on the running scene during track as a freshman. She has not backed down from the success that she achieved there. She ran a PR of 23:57 on Friday.
Danaya Wang is a first year runner who took a chance on the new to her sport of cross country. We're glad she has joined us and her work is also yielding results. The freshman ran a 28:15 PR. Improving upon the mark she set at Lamplighter.
It takes a leap of faith to join a team as a senior. Natalie Mattson listened to her friend Elizabeth Giles and did just that. On Friday, this first time runner ran almost a 2 minute PR from her first effort - clocking 30:39.
It was impressive to watch each athlete finish the race, recover, and then jog back along the course to cheer in their teammates. This is the teamwork that we encourage, but they are the ones to put it in motion. It was a fantastic show of support for one another.
But wait, this is not the end. There was one more race. A single runner, supported by the entire team!
You're not going to see her in any "official results" because she is not eligible race for our program due to MHSAA rules. Ingrid Thomas is woven into the fabric of this team. She is a pleasant and encouraging athlete who supports the entire team. We carved out an MHSAA approved "practice meet" for Ingrid while the course was set up for races. She started about 35 minutes after the girls race. Three athletes, Staton, Munson and Turck, each joined her for a lap of the course so she was not solo. But this effort was all Ingrid. She ran a PR of 19:57.5 (according to my watch and Coach Lagerquist's) dipping under 20 minutes for the first time ever. It was impressive to see!
What was also impressive about Ingrid's event was the support she received from the team. And this was not just the girls team, although they were loud and all over the course, it was also the boys team and the girls team from Bedford joined in on the action. The energy around the facility during her race was noticeable. Thank you all for being such great teammates!
The girls team is next in action at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational on the campus of Oakland University on 9/4/2026. This is a new race for us and our last before we take on the conference at Jambo 1.
