Group Task: Conflict Resolution  

📌 Instructions for Students (To Prepare Before Class)

You will be working in mini-groups (7-8) to explore a key aspect of conflict resolution. Each group should respond to one of the questions below. Research, discuss, and prepare a 3-4 minute in-class presentation. Presentations will take place during our next session.

• Read your assigned question below and begin discussing with your group.

• Prepare a short but insightful response.

• Include one real-life scenario (imagined or true) to support your point.

• Assign group roles: speaker(s), timekeeper, researcher, etc.

• Your presentation should be clear, engaging, and within 3 minutes

🔟 Group Discussion Questions: Conflict Resolution Unit

1. What are the major types of conflict (goal, cognitive, affective, behavioral)?
   Describe each and give a real or imagined example for at least two of them.

2. Explain the different levels of conflict (intra-personal, inter-personal, group, inter-organizational).
   Which level do you think is most common in schools or workplaces? Why?

3. What are some common root causes of conflict?
   Choose one and explain how failing to address it might escalate a conflict.

4. Using the 'Conflict Onion' model, identify the positions, interests, and needs in a basic school-related conflict.
   Why is it important to distinguish between these layers?

5. Describe the ‘Continuum of Tension’ or escalation staircase.
   What are the warning signs that a conflict is escalating?

6. Review the 'ABC Triangle' of conflict.
   How do attitude, behavior, and contradiction interact in a conflict situation? Give an example.

7. What are the five basic styles in conflict situations (e.g., avoid, compete, accommodate, collaborate, compromise)?
   When might each be appropriate—or harmful?

8. Analyze a conflict scenario using the 'Problem Tree' approach.
   Identify the core problem, its causes, and its effects.

9. How can cultural or social factors (e.g., religion, politics, identity) intensify cognitive conflict?
   Share a case where worldview differences led to misunderstanding.

10. How does conflict analysis help in resolving disputes?
    Discuss the importance of stakeholder mapping, contextual analysis, and problem prioritization.

🕒 Reminder: Group Presentation Guidelines

• The Course Representative will assign you to a group ahead of class.

• Each group will have 3 to 4 minutes maximum for their presentation.

• You are encouraged to use notes, cue cards, or visual aids (e.g., simple slides, props, or charts) to support your presentation.

• Groups are welcome to use role-play to demonstrate mediation scenarios or concepts in action.

• Be prepared to respond to one or more follow-up questions from the class or the facilitator.

• Any group member may be selected to present, so all members should be actively involved and well-prepared.
