blank card design

Note From Susan 1/23 to Sunny

Edges should have bleeds on card layout design - rope may be hard to align - the cuts are often off.

For the Groups of people explore different body sizes and types. What is the list of people in the image? You should be able to get image reference for them - some will be big and old and have big curly wigs.

[IMG 1] Working with a few of the founding fathers designs before i proceed on with any card design. Starting from portraits of the gentlemen, writing down notable characteristics of each and then moving to the stylizing based on the benchmarked art. It's important to have a consistent look for characters that may appear in more than one card in the deck.

[IMG 2] more refined drawings made according to style guide for washinton, jefferson, and [JOHN] adams

2/6 sketch of card art,

Susan is this yay or nay to move forward with for painting?

Wow! Yes.

I would like the hand to be reworked a little. List who the people are and let's test that with Andrew today.

Front right and back right look too similar

Washington and Jefferson were the characters that went at it at the 1st continental congress.

Sunny 2/9- i will go ahead and make the change for tuesday's class, this uses all of the characters that i drew references for (washington, john adam, jefferson, hamilton, and madison) hope review went well!

Redraw by Susan Bonner - 2/3/18 Let's exaggerate the body type and head differences. You have some great research in your drawings above - just exagerate more to match the style.

If you use these exaggerations in your Continental Congress piece you will be on style and can move forward to the event composition drawing.

Battle of Saratoga: Event (War) Card by Joseph Mead - Benedict Arnold riding into a cloud of fleeing Redcoats (Redesign #3, Fixed horse head)

Battle of Saratoga: Event (War) Card by Joseph Mead - (#5, Finished coloring, working on rim lighting and visual hierarchy.

Comments from Susan 2/19/18

  • Put a curve over the whole thing to make it pop more.
  • The hierarchy should be on the horse and rider not on the 2 front characters.
  • Add all of that frontal smoke like you had in your sketch for more power.
  • Remove your brown guide around image.

Battle of Saratoga: Event (War) Card by Joseph Mead - (#8, Fixed smoke, made Benedict Arnold younger, fixed minor graphic design issues)

Battle of Saratoga: Event (War) Card by Joseph Mead - Benedict Arnold leading a charge at the distant Redcoat Army

Battle of Saratoga - 1/31/18 Redraw by Susan Bonner - longer horse head for a more aggressive feel - also a longer head on Benedict Arnold for a more aggressive fight scene - change on left front character for more exaggeration - these changes make it fit more in the style direction.

APPROVED to move forward to COLOR

USER TESTING INFORMATION

Everybody I discussed card designs with were 7th grade white males. I gathered responses from four students.

  • Background: Students were enthusiastic about the color and battle scene in the back. "It looks really exciting, like there's a battle but you are seeing one part of it close up," said one boy.
  • Color: I asked the students how the colors were working. Most really approved of the dark tones that drew attention away from the redcoats, but one boy wanted the redcoats to stand out a bit more, and for Benedict's coat to be a brighter blue.
  • Emotions: When asked, students all answered that the redcoats were scared rather than angry, which was the intended reaction. They also thought it was clear that the Americans were winning. One boy thought the flag should have the american 13 colonies pattern on it to emphasize this.
  • Horse: I can't draw horses for beans in my opinion, but the kids thought the horse was really cool. One boy pointed out that it seemed like it was floating, and that there should be more dirt and dust to cover the back of it. I agree, as this area of the piece is still being painted.
  • Description: I read them the description of the battle aloud; all thought it did its job well and described the battle in an exciting way.

Notes from Susan 2/3/18

Also check out Netflix Turn - Washington's spies Season 1 - it tells the story of Arnold and Peggy Shippen and why he wanted to turn after the battle of Saratoga- General Gates took credit for his big win and he resented him. Planting the seed to turn sides to the Tories.

Note From Susan 1/23 to Joe

For the Groups of people explore different body sizes and types. What is the list of people in the image? Should the reds be 2 different body types?

Note 2 - on your rework - NICE - slight more exaggeration on the face of Arnold and make horses head longer like the Drew Hill Horse Benchmark

Comments from Susan 2/20/18

Did you work in such a way as to use color mode painting? It looks like you could have and then the painting would have been faster. If so record in your style guide.

Comments from Susan - 3/20/18

I like #2 the best - but I would like you to dig deeper into the story of them. This still feels like a portrait. Please put your research on the page above your sketches. This way we can dig deeper into the story to find "why" they came and supported the British and "how" they did it. Get beyond the amazing costumes. Getting closer to their faces will help that's why #2 is the best right now. There probably was not shaking of hands as portrayed in #3 as they were typically forced into service (press ganged) then when they fought they held no stake in the potential reward - they were mercenaries being used to add to the numbers.

Wikipedia:

American Patriots presented the soldiers as foreign mercenaries with no stake in America. Many of the men were press-ganged into Hessian service. Deserters were summarily executed or beaten by an entire company.[5] Hessian prisoners of war were put to work on local farms.

Rough Sketch #2: The Committee of Five are working on the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson is writing the brightly shining document on a table while Adams and Livingston are debating with one another.

User Testing - Many thought this spoke "event" card.

One man thought this would be more effective if the expressions of the characters were happy, as this is an exciting event.

Susan Comment - 3/20/18

All 3 of these are very good ideas. I think that #3 is the best for the game. It is the most iconic. I imagine a player pulling that event and feeling as if their hands have signed it because of the way that you placed the hands. I like the shine too, it would be a new element in the style guide but I think it will work. Watch the crop lines - bring it in a little especially on the left.

3/23 After discussing - #2 is best for the game - it is more of an event than an item card. Move forward with #2 - Watch for character matching with Continental Congress

Harsh Winter - Event Card.

Adjusted curves further, added Blue highlight, defined snow and cabins a bit more.

By Danielle Cowell

Comments from Susan - 3/23

#1 is the one to move forward with. It is most like an event. The others seem to be too close and therefore more of a portrait. Watch that you get period buildings - look to Valley Forge - Remove 1777-1778 from all of the text. Since this is a standard event in game it could happen at any time. Speak to the troops though near starving and freezing still were loyal to George Washington and the cause.

Comments from Susan - 3/23

I would like to see the next sketch before moving you forward. Look to scale for the objects against water - look for rivets and lines on the boat for construction.
