Target Audience: 8th Grade Students at Bloomfield Middle School
Essential Question: Why does a nation expand its territories and does it have any obligations when it does?
Lesson Description: In this lesson, students will analyze two major paintings that showcase the American perspective on why Westward Expansion was their God-given right, as a part of the concept of Manifest Destiny. Students will read about the concept of Manifest Destiny and complete an informal assessment, which will show that many of the same ideas about Manifest Destiny still exist in our country's mindset today. Students will create a comic strip to show the economic and political causes of Manifest Destiny, which will assess their understanding of the lesson.
