Do Now: On the Jamboard posted in the Google Meet chat, respond to the question "What type of government would you select if you were forming a government for a new country?" using the PostIt note and be sure to write your name on your response.
When the Founding Fathers were deciding on how they would establish their own form of government, they wanted to be sure to prevent the same problems that they had with the British government. Unfortunately, this approach lead to the first American government having a variety of problems that made governing the country nearly impossible. Let's start by watching a BrainPOP on the first American government, the Articles of Confederation.
Today's lesson is divided into two parts. Begin by listening to the Civics 101 Podcast on the Articles of Confederation, which will give you more details on the successes and failures of the United States' first government. When you hear the twenty minute timer go off in the Google Meet, come back for a two minute brain break. After the brain break, we will go into breakout rooms and you will work with your partner to identify three problems of the Articles of Confederation, which will go in the chart below, and then brainstorm a solution to each problem, which will also go in the chart.
Close: For the last five minutes of class, breakout rooms will end and we will debrief and discuss what problems and solutions of the Articles of Confederation that you identified with your partners.
