The first record occurred in 1855: Thomas John Bold of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1855) in The Zoologist, 1st series, Vol. XIII. p. 4808, dated August, 1855, says: 'A mature female of that rare bird, the Pectoral Sandpiper was shot by Mr. R. Duncan, of Newcastle, on the Northumbrian coast, near Whitley, on the 27th June last...
The next occurred on Holy Island in 1921 followed by one in 1969 that was trapped at Hadston. Blank years occurred in 1972, 78, 1981, 1990, 91, 97, 2004 and 2019.
This Siberian and North American wader is by far the commonest migrant wader arriving here and as the graph shows is on the increase with September being the peak month for arrivals.
Since the graphs there have been three individuals in 2020, six in 2022 and five in 2023.
