The first individual occurred on Greyside Fell, Settlingstones on 20th October 1908. This was followed by a record in 1958 at Hadston and another at Bamburgh in 1968. Since then there have been over 90 individuals (see graphs).
Cranes returned to Britain (Norfolk) in 1979 after becoming extinct during the 1600s and in early 2022 the population was estimated to be around 200 individuals.
In February 2026 probably the largest flock seen here appeared near Denwick containing thirty individuals.
Since the graphs ended in 2019 there have been seventeen individuals in 2020 with seven in both 2021 and 2022. Thirteen were seen in 2023.
