Perry (1946: 175) states that Lilburn recalls a Sabine's Gull that was shot by a puntsman in the nineteen-twenties. Galloway & Meek (1978-83) state the first record as having occurred about Holy Island in the winter sometime in the 1920s when one was seen by James Lilburn. Lilburn had served time in the Royal Navy. However, Temperley in recording S. E. Cook's sighting on Holy Island in September of 1946 states this record to be the first for the county (Naturalist 72: 129). See graphs for the rest of the occurrences.
The peak years were in 2007 when twenty-one individuals were recorded and 2005 when seventeen flew by the headlands. Strangely, there were none in 2006.
Since the graphs ended in 2019 eight have occurred in 2020, seven in 2021 and thirteen in 2022.
