August 2013 (17) Quinn Stevenson was killed by a drunk driver at the age of 17. Quinn loved sports (many of them), he had many best friends and was enrolled in Western Academy of Broadcasting - he wanted to become a sports broadcaster.
April 2018 (18) Evan Thomas was killed in the Bronco Hockey Team bus accident. Evan was a bright light and loved being a part of a team. He was a great student winning several awards. His future was bright.
Both boys grew up playing Blue Jay baseball (our zone in Saskatoon) enjoying the game and the buddies they played with.
The families have always been somewhat connected but now they share the pain of losing a son. Saskatoon Baseball named baseball Tournaments after the boys. Quinn's is a Midget AA which has turned out to be one of the largest in Western Canada hosting 24 teams. Evan's is a Bantam AAA tournament which has become a premier event. The families decided to create a T-shirt to sell to teams entering the tournament. The families reached out to 22fresh and Kip Simon (owner) came up with the Phrase Pearls only for the Boys and we loved it.
Pearl /pərl/noun
Slang for a brand-new baseball right out of the box/package. A term used most likely only by players/families deep into baseball culture. Players get excited when coach brings out a new box of pearls to throw in the bag.
The back of the shirt has Evan and Quinn’s initials and baseball numbers.
Kip Simon's goal with this piece was to appeal to all baseball fans while still paying respect to Evan and Quinn, that loved the game. The idea of "Pearls Only" came to him while thinking what baseballs would be like in the afterlife. He mentioned that they better all be Pearls.
Funds from Pearls Only for the Boys will support the new Multi-Sport Centre overlooking Cairns Field at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex. To date, over 700 shirts have been sold . These sales have allowed the Stevenson and Thomas families to make a $12K donation to GHSC construction. Much thanks to 22fresh whose support has been instrumental to the success of Pearls Only for the Boys.
Pearls Only for the Boys started as a 22fresh tee shirt initiative. It now includes 22fresh hoodies.
Background on how Pearls Only for the Boys got started. Kip Simon came up with the concept and his company 22fresh supplied the tee shirts (and hoodies).
The Stevenson and Thomas families officially presented $12,000 to the Friends of the Bowl (Gordie Howe Sports Complex) on behalf of Pearls Only for the Boys.
Along with the Thomas's we made another donation to the Gordie Howe Sports Complex, The Pearls Only for the Boys Campaign raised a total of $20,355 for GHSC. The success of Pearls Only for the Boys was not possible without the generosity of Kip Simon at 22Fresh ... thanks Kip!
