Quinn Stevenson Memorial Hockey Day

QSMHD 2019

The 7th Annual Quinn Stevenson Memorial Hockey day will not be was held on the first or second Saturday of October at the ACT barn. Unfortunately, with changes to Novice and Initiation programs and various other factors, the Saskatoon Redwings have decided that QSMHD19 will not happen. Sidebar: These changes were totally out of the control of the Saskatoon Redwings. We have heard from many that are disappointed that QSMHD is cancelled for 2019. It was always exciting to kick off another hockey season with some games, connect with many familiar hockey friends and meet many new hockey parents and players, watch players and families of the younger Redwings enjoy the day, and remember Quinn the Redwing hockey player. We are hopeful that QSMHD may be held again in the future. We do understand though that as August 3rd, 2013 gets farther in the rear view mirror, it will be harder to rekindle interest in the Quinn Stevenson Memorial Hockey Day. Thanks to all who have contributed or volunteered to have made the Quinn Stevenson Memorial Hockey Day such a great event to remember Quinn the Saskatoon Redwing hockey player.

QSMHD 2018

The 6th Annual Quinn Stevenson Memorial Hockey day was held at the ACT barn Oct. 13th, 2018. We were able connect again with many familiar hockey friends and and meet many new hockey parents and players. It always warms our hearts so see the Redwing hockey community come together to kick off another hockey season remember Quinn the Redwing hockey player.

Thank to our Redwing family for supporting QSMHD18 hosted by the Saskatoon Redwings. The $2,500.00 raised from the Bake Sale, 50/50, and silent auction items was donated to MADD Saskatoon. Events like QSMHD could not happen without the time and effort of all the volunteers. We also appreciate everyone that came out and enjoyed some hockey and fellowship. Our family is Redwing proud! #prayforquinn

Social media from the day.

It is always fun seeing the initiation players. One of the coaches on the right is friend of Quinn's - Ty Rohlicek. Ty's son, Alden, is a new hockey player. It gives us unique perspective to see kids of Quinn's friends to now be part of QSMHD.

Midget A Game: Redwing Ice vs. Wild. I head coach the Redwing Ice this 2018-19 season. Thanks to Curtis Camrud and Peter Keating for organizing their crew to come of play the final QSMH18 game with us.

At least it did not snow 😉 for QSMHD18:

Garth Kuemper, 2nd Asst Commissioner on the Redwing executive, won the 50/50. Congrats Garth!

Here is a Google Photos memory of the QSMHD (2013). There are so many memories for the past five QSMHD!

Sports were an important part of Quinn's life, and Bonny and I will always cherish the sports and hockey 'moments' we had with Quinn and Shea.

QSMHD 2017

QSMHD17 was another great success. Compared to 2016, QSMHD17 weather was fantastic. As with past hockey days, it was a great day for the Redwing hockey community to get together for a fun day. It also was a great day to remember Quinn.

QSMHD 2016

One of highlights - more aptly stated 'lowlights' - for QSMHD 2016 was the weather (see below). On Tues. and Wed. (Oct. 4-5) we received about 1' of snow. That combined with a crappy Hockey Day forecast forced us to cancel the outdoor concession and outdoor activities.

New this year was our highlight hockey game Bruins (Quinn's ASHL team) vs. Goats (Shea's ASHL team). Goat's won in a shoot out. Actually the Goat won before the shoot out. Scorekeeper shenanigans resulted in the game finishing in a tie at the end of regulation time. We #JammedTheJem and had lots of hockey fun!

We were still able to proceed with Pass the Puck Fill the Truck (Troy Carbno's idea), Silent Auction, and 50/50 ($1040 was awarded to Karen Dow) at ACT Arena. The following items also raised money for Trust: Bake Sale = $1207 and Donations = $85. The Trust in turn will contribute $2500 to the KHL (Kinsmen Hockey League) bulk stick order with funds raised from QSMHD.

A hockey mom brought her baby to ACT. Her backpack baby carrier has a QS bumper sticker on it.

Overall, the day was a great success! Special thanks to EJ Babey, Troy Carbno, Vance Jones, and all the 50/50 volunteers. Without you, this day would not be possible. We did a good job of filling the truck, the Redwing Hockey Community kicked off another season, and fun was had by all. It is hard not imagine that a smiling blond-haired, bright-eyed young man was looking over us at QSMHD all day long.

QSMHD 2015

The 3rd Annual Quinn Stevenson Memorial Hockey Day (QSMHD) was hosted by the Zone G Redwings at ACT arena on Sat., Oct. 10th, 2015.

QSMHD 2015 was another undeniable success. The weather was fantastic and much fun was had by all at ACT Arena Oct. 10th, 2015. New for QSMHD 2015: 1) Pancake breakfast, 2) Bake Sale, and 3) Initiation teams participated in hockey portion of the day.

Throughout day you could see and feel the fun had by all in the hockey rink and street hockey. Also, the fellowship shared by having our entire Redwing family was clearly evident. It only seems fitting that Quinn's enjoyment as a Redwing should be continued as a yearly event to bring all Redwings together to share enjoyment of such a great game, and share memories of Quinn, a special young man the enjoyed many years of life as a Redwing.

The day culminated in the feature hockey game of the day. This year Bonny coached a team of Quinn and Shea's buddies. Here team played the Midget A team coached by myself (Craig). Bonny's 'bad cop' style of coaching and my 'good cop' style of coaching ended up resulted in a 7-7 tie at the end of regulation play. However, Bonny managed to motivate her shooters in the OT shoot out to get the win.

This day would be possible without the efforts of Vance Jones, EJ Babey, and many others. Vance was the brainchild of QSMHD back in August of 2013, and he continues to be a major part of the day. This year Vance ran the Pancake Breakfast and reffed the final game of the day. EJ's efforts and connections also have been and continue to be an important part of the continued success of QSMHD. Special thanks to Ang Moir and Sandra/Keith Bernauer. Ang looked after arranging volunteers. Sandra managed the Bake Sale. Keith Bernauer has arranged and looked after parking for all three years of QSMHD. Also, thanks to Cathy Kozak and Linda Kappel who did an extended shift on 50/50, and Troy Carbno. Finally, thanks to all others that volunteered their time to ref hockey and street hockey, and to those that assisted with 50/50 and Pancake Breakfast. This day would not have been possible with all those that 'chipped in'.

CJWW aired a couple newscasts (newscast 1 and newscast 2) that included an interview with Bonny. CTV NEWS were present at the hockey day to do interviews with Bonny and I, and others. These interviews were aired on the Oct 10th Evening News.

QSMHD 2014

The 2nd Annual Quinn Stevenson Memorial Hockey Day (QSMHD) was hosted by the Zone Redwings at ACT arena on Sat., Oct. 11th, 2014 at ACT arena. It's inspiration came from Vance Jones (a mastermind of almost everything!) as a way for our Redwing families to get together at the rink and kick off another year of hockey with some fun scrimmages and some street hockey. It was also set up to honor and remember Quinn (QS6), who was all about fun and sports.

Bonny and I both enjoy getting out helping make the event the best it could be, and chatting with old and new acquaintances. One of my conversations was with Myles Loeffler, one of our zone coaches who had coached with me on a couple of midget teams Quinn played on. Myles talked about Quinn the hockey player. This is not a direct quote from Myles, but it a close paraphrase of what he said. Quinn went our every shift and gave it his all. When he came back to the bench you could be sure you hear him laughing about something. These words capture what QSMHD, and minor sports in general, should be about - work hard and the enjoy the moment.

In the final game of the day, the ASHL Bruins fell to the Tier 2 Wings team (Shea's team) 6-4. Throughout the whole game there was exciting, fast hockey, laughter from both benches, healthy chirping between teams, and great sportsmanship. Quinn for sure was smiling upon this great finale to another QSMHD.

Other Highlights

Andy and Blair Davidson had the highest bid ($1854) on the Jean Béliveau signed Forum chair.

Courtney Hilderman won $1000 in the 50/50 draw.

The Hawks won the Competitive Division of the Street Hockey tourney.

QSMHD 2013

The 1st Annual Quinn Stevenson Memorial Hockey Day (QSMHD) was hosted by the Zone Redwings at ACT arena on Sat., Oct. 12th, 2013 at ACT arena.

The QSMHD was the brainchild of Vance Jones (midget coordinator for Redwing executive), and EJ Babey (commissioner for Redwing executive) immediately came on aboard. These two as co-chairs were joined by some others on Redwing Executives, Kurt and Andrea Huber, Bonny and myself, and Julie Nicholson and Dan Demchenko who helped with food. There were lots of smiles and fun had by all...it truly did bring the hockey community together. The sun shone all day and Quinn most certainly was smiling over us all at ACT on Oct. 12th, 2013.

I think Vance's 4-point summary of the day captures the spirit of QSMHD:

for sure all the smiles and hugs. Not just hugs for me but looking around at all the people happy to see each other after a long summer with no hockey. How many hugs did Bonny get? WOW

The moms ball hockey team- My stomach still hurts – Julie and the trash talk - love it.

the turn out – The reason I suggested this day is our notorious poor turn out during practices. I didn’t do a count but all teams had enough players to play. And the parents stayed and watched not just drop and go. Did you see how many Midgets Played they came to support Quinn.

The prizes – WOW did people ever come through not only the bids but the sheer quality of the donated prizes. And the 50/50 super.

I think the attached article below captures what hockey means to us parents and how it can pull a community together.
