QSMAA23 Synopsis

Well, despite mother nature we were able to host another successful Quinn Stevenson Memorial 18U tourney.   We had not had any precipitation for some time.  So of course it had to rain

A tournament of this size is not possible with all of our volunteers.  Special thanks to Carla Lambert, our volunteer coordinator.  She worked tirelessly to ensure local volunteers were present at all games and tournament ran smoothly.  Thanks to Scott Mills and his umpire crew.  We have the best officials in Western Canada, and at a big tournament like the Quinn Stevenson it really shows how lucky we are to have such great officials.  And thanks to Jesse Korte and his Baseball Saskatoon diamond prep crew, and some of our Saskatoon dads, particularly Scott Maslin, that helped get the swampy field at Waygood and McCourt into.  Similar thanks to the Gordie Howe Sports Complex crew that kept Cairn/Leakos in shape.  We played all Friday games at Cairn/Leakos, which required rapid prep and turnaround of games.

Watch Global news piece on the tournament.

QSMAA22 Synopsis

It was great to see the 2022 Quinn Stevenson Memorial Midget AA Tournament back after a two year COVID hiatus.  The weather forecast about a week prior to did not look good.  Ultimately, the weather was good and we only had a rain shower during the final games that held things up only for a few minutes (see below).  You could tell by the 'buzz' that players, coaches, parents, and grandparents were happy to be back at the Quinn Stevenson tourney.  Conversations at the diamonds indicated that everyone had read Quinn's baseball story and realized this tournament is more than just a collection of baseball games.  It is more about the fellowships and friendships, and the competition, and not just about the wins and the losses.

The organizing committee had to work through a few hiccups that we can attribute to being out of practice.  Once we got through those initials problems the tournament went off without a hitch.  There were a couple of player ejections and an ambulance called to Leakos Fields.  Luckily the ejections were not serious and the player that required an ambulance was not seriously injured (dislocated knee).

Many thanks to Carla, Laner, and Derrin.  Carla helped organize volunteers.  Laner and Derrin organized and facilitated diamond prep at the Peter Zakreski (Stonebridge) Diamonds - this year we played more games at the Zakreski Diamonds and less at the Waygood Diamonds.  Thanks to Jesse Korte, Executive Director of Baseball Saskatoon, and his crew for looking after Waygood Diamond prep.  Johnny Marciniuk, and his diamond prep crews at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex (Cairns and Leakos Fields) made sure diamonds were ready for play and help Bonny and I with all of our requests.  Without our tournament committee, boots-on-the-ground volunteers, and Baseball Saskatoon support staff a tournament of this size would not be possible.

Another greater weekend of fellowship, competition, and remembering QS16.

Regina White Sox, C Event winner

Parkland Expos are the 2022 champs of the Quinn Stevenson Memorial Midget AA Tournament.

Weather for QSMAA22 end up much better than forecast.  We only got a sprinkle during final games.

Ron Wallace, Lane's Wallace's dad, sent a donation to The Trust in conjunction with the Quinn Stevenson Tournament.  His thoughtfulness and generosity is very much appreciated.

Another token of generosity occurred at the B Event Final presentations.  After the runner up S5 Giants were presented their cash prize, they approached us and donated the cheque to The Trust.  Immediately after this, the Saskatoon Blue Jays SPBL did they same.  This had to be the 'moment' of QSMAA22.

QSMAA 2021

The 7th (supposed to be 8th) Annual Quinn Stevenson Memorial Midget AA Tournament was supposed to be held May 28 - 30, 2021.

QSMAA 2020

The 7th Annual Quinn Stevenson Memorial Midget AA Tournament to be held May 29 - 31, 2020 was CANCELLED May 1, 2020.

2020 has been the year of the COVID-19 pandemic - it has been one for the ages!  Our world, country, and province has been 'locked down' and we are all isolating ourselves from others in our homes and physical distancing.  At the time of cancellation, there were a few issues related to the pandemic that forced us to make a decision on this years tourney.  In Saskatchewan, we are only set to be in 2nd of 5 phases towards resuming ‘normal activities’ in the province on May 19th.  Minor sports and baseball are set to resume in phase 4.  One can assume phase 4 will likely not happen before the end of May.  There are also thoughts that the SK Health Authority may limit travel of minor sports teams when we hit phase 4, thus forcing only local games.  Last but not least, the City of Saskatoon has banned all team activities on sports fields till July 1, and currently have no plans to bring full staffing back to maintain diamonds till then.  With all of these issues and restrictions, there was no choice to cancel QSMAA 2020.

The response to the 2020 tourney was the most ever - 33 registrants.  This is amazing and we are ever so grateful for the past and continued interest that teams have with the Quinn Stevenson Memorial Midget AA Tournament.  We hope you will consider registering for the 2021 Quinn Stevenson Midget AA Tourney.

Bonny and I have enjoyed QSMAA as way to connect with the ball community, enjoy a weekend at the ball diamond, and most of all celebrating the life of our son Quinn with a sport he most enjoyed.  It will be sad knowing that the weekend of May 29 - 31 will like the weekend of the past two and half months.  Although we have technically cancelled the tourney, there is a small chance that we may run a smaller version of QSMAA later in summer if we can eventually proceed with a ball season.  For example, we might do a local-team version of QSMAA perhaps in conjunction with a the City Midget League Championship Tournament.

One thing is for certain.  There will be a Quinn Stevenson Memorial Midget AA Tournament in 2021.  Quinn enjoyed the game of baseball and shared his love of the game with many - the Slow Train way to play baseball.  Quinn's energy and love of baseball will keep QSMAA for many years.

Notes from teams:

Craig and Bonnie. On behalf of players my coaches and my families I want to thank you for an incredible tournament. In a way it almost seemed destined for the Blue Jays to win and we are ok with that. Having hosted our own tournament with only 8 teams I know the amount of work it takes so 24 is a huge undertaking and you and your volunteers were awesome.

The passion you have to host this tournament in your sons name is unmatched and honestly even after a tough game it makes us all think there is more to life than the outcome.

Again my sincere thanks

Coach Jason St Albert Cardinals.

Those are very kind words Jason.  We try to keep the spirit of the tourney similar to the spirit of how Quinn played the game.  I think part of the reason the tourney has been popular is because of this.  We are very lucky to have a great core of volunteers.  We hope that city and GHSC will have field conditions in better shape.  It was great to meet you and your team.  You guys are competitors, but u and your guys showed great sportsmanship to the Blue Jays.  Take care, hope to see you next year, and best of luck with the rest of your season.  Craig and Bonny

Hi Craig:

Curtis Goodfellow sending a note to you wishing you and family well with the Quinn memorial tournament this weekend.  After 3 years we have graduated into Junior ball.  The Quinn Stevenson tournament and tragedy was and is known by our Regina players the past years I have been involved.  Just wanting to wish you a great tournament and Know that I also use this tournament and Quinn’s memory to have the discussion with my son Evan and his friends.  .  Good luck this weekend Craig.

Curtis Goodfellow

Former Coach/Manager

Regina Midget AA baseball

Thx for the nice words Curtis.  We will miss seeing you around the diamond.  The one thing Bonny and I enjoy, and find cathartic, is seeing all those familiar faces come to enjoy some baseball for Quinn.

Craig

Thanks for making the 6th annual Quinn Stevenson Memorial Midget AA Tournament a great event.  It is near and dear to both of us because it brings us close to the baseball community and allows us to memorialize Quinn with a sporting event that was near and dear to him.  We appreciate all of the great feedback from teams and always strive to make this tournament the best experience that we can.  This tournament has many volunteers that help us get things done, and make it one of the biggest and most fun Midget tournaments in W. Canada.  Thanks to all of our volunteers - you know who you are!

Rain created much havoc at QSMAA18.  Weather for the weekend.  Friday was huge headache.  Friday games were cancelled because of rain.  However, we got play going at noon on Saturday, and we had a nice Sunday.

It is our intention to continue running at 24-team tourney.  Therefore, register early (start checking baseballsaskatoon.com about mid-March) as it fills quickly.  Spread the word about this tourney so we have a waiting list in the event of a team dropping out again.  I am always amazed how many people don’t know about this Midget AA Tourney.  Remember, our facilities at Cairns/Leakos will be second to none next year after construction is complete.  We are very excited about these upgrades, and we are sure all teams coming next year will feel the same.

Please don't hesitate to supply us with any comments or feedback, we are always looking for ways to make it a better event.

Thank to all that volunteered and supported Quinn's tourney and making it such a great event.

Ron Wallace - Lane's dad - send us a nice letter and gave a donation to The Trust.  The thoughtfulness and generosity of people leaves us speechless.  We received the $100 cheque the Optimist twirlers - they ran the 2018 concession - later in the summer.  It is all these kind acts that allow us to keep The Trust alive and kicking.

Weather started shaky (heavy thundershower Friday @ 4 pm).  It was warm and sunny for the remainder of the weekend with gusty winds.

This photo is my favorite.  It was taken at Cairns (Blue Jay Bombers vs. Moose Jaw Canucks) on Friday evening - notice the '16' at back of the batters box.  The other photo shows the '16' at the conclusion of the A Final game.

QSMAA 2014

The 1st Annual Quinn Stevenson Memorial Midget AA Tournament was held June 6-8, 2014.  The 2014 Slow Trains (Shea and his buddies) were entered.  The Slow Trains had some good games and not so good game.  However, that got to the chance to play in a tournament renamed in Quinn's memory.  Although the weather was unsettled all weekend, we had beautiful weather to finish the tourney.

The finish included that A final game at Waygood 1; Medicine Hat Majestics vs. Regina Pacers with Medicine Hat as winner.  B final was won by Kindersley Royals vs. Swan Valley Tigers.  C final was won by Regina White Sox vs. Regina Angels.  D final was won by Saskatoon Braves.

While watching the A final game I was taken back to July 16, 2013 ... Quinn's final minor ball game with his Slow Train buddies, and better yet the day they beat the Martensville Mustangs to win the city championship.  This photo This photo is forever imprinted in my mind.  The baseball gods were, and still are, smiling at this snapshot in time.  Makes me wish that Quinn could come back for one more game to play with his brother and the 2014 Slow Trains.
