Spirits

Spirits are the main species of the afterlife, many of them roaming throughout all of the realms of the afterlife as well as the mortal world. While most are physical apparitions, there are a few which are completely ethereal and cannot be touched or touch anything, making combat with, against or as one of them especially difficult.

The death of a person drastically affects what kind of spirit they'll become in their second life, for example - if someone were to die choking on food, or by poisoned food, they would become a foodie spirit of the type of food which killed them. In rare instances, a person will die and become a completely random type of spirit, completely undetermined by how they died but instead what the universes choose for them. In extremely rare instances, a person can be born a spirit. Upon death, that spirit will then be reincarnated as another spirit, and go on living their life until they're forgotten as usual.

Most spirits can live on for another ten thousand years, but their life span greatly depends on how many living people there are to remember them by. When a spirit is completely forgotten, they'll completely die and be reincarnated as a new person, and a new living species. If a spirit is killed in combat, they cannot be resurrected or returned to the mortal world, as they will already be reincarnated into a new person.

Characters who die have the option to become Spirit as their afterlife species.

Common Ghost

Excelling in both cold and water magic, Ghosts are the living dead of the mortal realms, wandering free from the three realms of the dead to live their life out like they would have done when they were alive. Having bodies made of transparent, sticky ectoplasm that reveals their skeletons underneath, landing a decent physical blow on them can be hard, even nearly impossible, but magic attacks injure them far more than it would anything else.

Typically coming into existence when either denied entry to one, or all, of the three realms of the dead, or from being granted access to the mortal world through Limbo, ghosts prefer to live the solitary life of peace they likely didn’t have to lead to their death - that and they hope not to bump into anyone they saw in life, not wishing to cause any further emotional hurt to anyone close to them. This however doesn’t mean they won’t visit, they just prefer to wait until the emotional turmoil has passed, or understanding of how they died has reached everyone close to them.

The bodies of most ghosts are made from a freezing cold, blue or white coloured spectre which makes it extremely hard for them to interact with physical objects, but not impossible. Many objects which aren't also made from similar spectres will slip from their hands like butter, though unusually they have no problems with interacting with fleshy bodies.

The coldness of their ethereal, undead spectres causes a constant, ice cold steam to rise from their bodies. It's most noticeable in a warmer environment, which they don't often find themselves in, preferring the colder environments of places such as the Undead Swamps of Oya.

Because of their completely ethereal bodies, no common ghost has the necessity to eat. While that's consistent for most, if not all of the Spectaral genus, it doesn't mean consuming food is impossible for them. Any food which they do eat can't be properly digested and instead fades away and dissolves into their spectre, thus giving them no nutrients, but they still get the pleasure of the taste.

Additionally, these ghosts are well known for their ability to lift anyone who has died recently as a temporary spectre, similar to them in form except more like a glowing Spectrolite spirit, rather than a raw ghost. Still capable of touching things, but completely see through and.. Dead.

Foodie

Foodies are, as their name suggests, spirits of food. They’ll often take on the form of, and be named after, any type of food from sweet treets to savoury dinners. Sometimes, they’ll even just be sentient food. Typically they come into existence when a person dies of Candencitia, however when leaving Limbo ghosts have a random chance of becoming a Foodie too, so they don’t have to come from Candencitia.

Usually Foodies can be eaten and taste just like regular food, regenerating themselves over time afterwards, however eating the food substance straight off their body can harm them, so it’s best to just wait for food to fall off of them, or ask them if they can remove some food from their person beforehand.

Magically, they can excel in food based magics, from making magically enhanced food to advanced Donyokumancy (food magic). Their size can range dramatically from 3ft to as tall as 10ft.

Foodies are the most unique species of spirit in Quiazal, an unusual species collective of spirits which completely resemble food. Unlike other spirits, they're not made of ectoplasm or woven spectres but are instead made entirely of the food they represent, making them completely edible.

Every different consumable provides a different body matter for the foodie, and not just foods but drinks also. They can be completely on their own in the open, or they can have body mass which resembles glass, cutlery or crockery and the like. Every foodie's appearance is unique, even if they're the same type of food.

The weight of a Foodie spirit is an exceptionally unusual trait and is usually based off of how 'light' their food type is, with light being defined as how well it eats. Light and fluffy like rice, or harder and requiring a bit of force like freshly refrigerated chocolate. The harder their food type, the heavier they are.

Usually their cutlery, crockery and glass adds no separate weight to their bodies for reasons unknown.

Poltergeisten

Poltergeisten are a small, timid species of ghost which have the ability to possess any object and become a humanoid or small form of said object. Typically they only change their form for a defense mechanism, and each Poltergeisten has a preferred form to take on, from candles and lamps to more advanced forms such as trees and sometimes even entire buildings.

Most Poltergeisten prefer to keep themselves hidden away in objects, or their small forms, usually too timid to attempt word conversation with anything but other Poltergeisten. The magic they use can vary based on the object they are, but typically they use forms of healing magics, preferring not to do anything for malicious intent.

More advanced Poltergeisten tend to be placed as guardians of something, some possessing angel status at graveyards, or even being as advanced as possessing the trees of the undead swamps.

It’s impossible to hit a Poltergeisten with a physical blow, them instead needing to be attacked with any form of magic due to their ethereal physical make up, but why would you want to? Similarly, they can only use magical attacks.

Their inability to touch any physical substance means that these unusual shapeshifting spectres cannot eat anything. They don't need to, lacking any form of internal organs to allow them to shapeshift completely to their total potential. Instead, they get their energy from basking in the sun, much like a flower.

Although shy, Poltergeisten can be extremely territorial and powerful when require to be. A prime example are the poltergeisten of the Undead Swamps, extremely huge silver willow trees which toy with and slap around anyone who dares mess with their environment.

When they change into a human form of an object, they have no need to go inside of the object and instead their form changes to resemble the object in the closest way possible for their humanoid composition. (See the reference image for an example, a candle.)

Possessing an object is much harder, but much safer for these spirits. Most objects require an excessive amount of energy to hide in and then maintain in a way that's comfortable for them, with their whole body spreading out entirely over the makeup of the article. Keeping perfect stillness is just as important, as they can make these objects move.
