The Gnome is one of the few smaller races of Quiazal. Deriving from evolved genetics of Tenters and Elves, these small individuals are much more magically enhanced than their taller counterparts, not requiring the use of magical items to use basic forms of magic but preferring to keep staffs and wands on hand, just in case.
Much like Tenters, Gnomes are highly advanced in Intelligence, dexterity and wisdom, all of which they put to use for construction, forgery, blacksmithery and potion brewery. Often they’ll be found working in emporiums, inns, taverns and anywhere else they can put their creative, smart minds to use, typically around Oya, and Neverwinter. Despite being small, they’re especially good at fast construction and deconstruction of buildings, rail tracks, bridges and especially anything technological.
Gnomes have assisted lots in the progression of Magitek and Onotek as well, working alongside their humanoid counterparts to grow and enhance the numerous possibilities through the use of machinery and magical energy combined. With the enhancement of these technologies still on the rise, and the Magitek Order ever growing, Gnomes have never had a better opportunity to allow their creative minds to flourish.
The Quarkmaster is the most common and everpresent species of Gnome, found all around the world exploring every nook and cranny they can. These Gnomes break out of their comfort zone of familiarity with the world to explore and learn about every aspect of the Almanac they can, from the vast geography and biology of the open regions to even the smallest details in the greatest pieces of Magitek and Onotek.
It's this open minded nature which they harbour which has turned these Gnomes not just into amazing spelunkers, researchers and scientists, but also extremely ignorant and egotistical 'brats' as many may know them as. They're extremely competitive not just with one another, but other species as a whole, wishing to be the very best at their particular study and allowing no other to reach above them.
Their small size causes them to be a great target among groups who wish to wipe them off the face of the Earth, unfortunate especially for the rare Quarkmaster which just so happens to not be egotistical or ignorant to others around them. Bullying is common within this community, and sometimes even the theft of goods. Stolen goods being claimed as one's own work is as common as rain on a clouded day.
Quarkmaster Gnomes generally have pale, peachy coloured skin with slightly darker tones reaching down their forearms into their palms. This skin is smooth in texture up until it reaches their hands, where it becomes rough and almost scaly. This was first believed to be because of their spelunking activities, until proven false by the babies of the species who also have this same trait.
Their ears are significantly smaller than most, causing them to be slightly short of hearing, however they're pointed much like their elven cousins. This allows them to hear the much finer details: Bugs scratching in the ground, individual segments of machinery clinking together, the individual threads of fabric in clothing and the like.
The insides of their mouths is lined entirely with smooth molars and premolars, with smooth incisors at the front. They lack canine teeth, and their incisors aren't sharp enough to slice through meat, driving them into an entirely herbivorous state. They are the only gnome species which only eats organic plant material.
Additionally, their eyes have horizontal pupils within them instead of horizontal or rounded. It's unclear why this is the case, but it's definitely useful to these individuals, as they don't have a need to hunt on long journeys and have an extremely wide vision, protecting them from any forms of danger.
Occasionally, but extremely rarely and considered to be a defective growth, these gnomes can also grow hooves on their feet. Sometimes this branches up into entire deer legs, making them look more like a short Faun than a gnome.
Donner, or Redcap gnomes are the smallest and most versatile species of gnome. These tiny gnomes are well known for being extremely hostile towards other species regardless of how large they are, but this is only if certain circumstances are met. While not actively hostile, or hunting out other individuals, they will go on an immediate offensive towards anyone who interrupts their day without reason to, gets in theirs or an ally's way, or, most importantly: removes their cap.
Donner gnomes are highly unusual in every essence of the very word's meaning. They are self serving, and will only work with allies if a pact, bond or specific deal or gamble is made. They never actively seek out assistance from another individual, even if they truly need it, and remain ignorant to the world around them.
Many Donner gnomes can't speak English and are well known for rabbling nonsensical screams or grumbles. This doesn't mean they can't learn it however, and most teach themselves basic communication skills for when they need it most.
Donner gnomes appear to have no visible ears beneath the flaps of their caps when present, and instead only have holes much like a reptile. All Donner gnomes wear caps of varying styles and shapes, always red in colour, sitting comfortably around an unusual bone which sticks out of the back of their head. This bone has a similar appearance to the swirling look of a unicorn horn.
They use their caps to hide this embarrassing appendage out of shame for their growth, however it's entirely normal to be their for their subspecies. This growth is a normal feature of their skull and hides the entirety of their brain. Ironically, for having such a large brain, they aren't as intelligent as one would think.
Donner gnomes are entirely carnivorous, with mouths filled with sharp canines and incisors they not only are designed for ripping through the meat that they eat, but any organic being which they latch onto. In some cases, they're even strong enough to rip and tear through varying degrees of metal armour, depending on how thick it is.
Their skin is typically a pale green colour with speckles of darker greens and blues lining in varying patches, typically around their shoulders, knees and face but also anywhere else they may form. Sometimes, this is stained a red/brown colour.
Their eyes are often and empty and white, with their pupils being the same colour as their scleras, giving an empty and soulless appearance, one of the many things which makes them so terrifying. Additionally, the tips of their fingers are often capped off with sharp, black or dark brown claws usually stained with blood, dirt or some other substances depending on where they've been digging.
