Aquatic Folk

The aquatic folk are the most enclosed of all the species genuses found in Quiazal. These are, as their name suggests, any and all species which are heavily water based. Some of these could also be considered part chimeric, and many of them are mixtures between fish and aquatic crustaceans or amphibians + humans.

They can most commonly be found roaming around the seas and large bodies of water, but all aquatic folk possess the ability to enter land masses as well.

Mortal Mermaids

Mortal Mermaids/Mermen are the only ocean-dwelling Ambivalent creature in Quiazal, resembling a humanoid with gills, fins and a long fish tail. Being both physically and magically enhanced makes them perfectly adept for combat, however this is most effective in water, as on land they aren’t quite so agile. Clawed feet make it harder to run at high speeds, along with the extra weight from their tails, causing a 6ft tall Mermaid/Merman to weigh up to 200lbs.

Commonly they’ll be found lounging around on beaches or swimming around in coral reefs and the underwater caverns, but being out of water isn’t fatal for them in any way, allowing them to freely roam around the cities too. Moisture to their skin is important, and if they remain out of water for too long they’ll start drying up and retreat back to the comfort of wetness.

Averaging about 6.5ft in height, and 250lbs in weight, the Mermaids prefer to hang around the beaches than anywhere else. Places like Oya can be fatal to them, from smaug and heat, without the special care, protective spells or potions.

All mortal mermaids can take on the distinctive species of any kind of fish, or non fish aquatic creature, from common tropical fish, to sharks, dolphins, whales and even jelly fish and crustaceans.

Siren

Sirens, more commonly referred to as mermaids or songs of the sea, are aquatic chimerics with the upper half of a human and the lower half of an aquatic creature, most commonly fish, whales, porpoises and eels/water snakes.

While not all of them do, most possess the ability to lure people in, usually of the opposite sex, through the use of their siren’s song. Some do this with malicious intent, while others do it on accident when singing out of loneliness, or just because they wanted to sing. All singing from a Siren holds the same effect, whether they intend it to or not, so most prefer to remain mute until they truly need to speak, or if their need to sing becomes relevant.

Those who use it maliciously are often looking for an excuse to obtain power through all kinds of means, commonly through eating their essences and then their essence-less body afterwards, but usually through persuading them to join their side and work for them as slaves.

Kelpie

Kelpies are aquatic shapeshifters and master of water magic, commonly taking on the form of either a horse with a fish tail, a horse with a main of kelp, or a beautiful man or woman, or a person with horse legs. Often, the form with horse legs can lead to confusion as to whether they’re demons or not, but in reality, kelpies are just innocent spirits who care a lot about aquatic life and living in the water.

Often they can be found on beaches or around lakes and pools at pretty much any water source anywhere, and are entirely malevolent. They can be birthed from either two Kelpies breeding, or from a sacrificial ritual of drowning a Tenter, or any other humanoid, in a body of water. Simply brutally drowning them won’t work, as the person needs to consent and be ready to become a Kelpie before the ritual, as well as the water needing to be purified with drops of angel tears beforehand.
