THINGS TO AVOID
Copyright infringement
This is could become a serious offense and generate negative PR. Be sure to double-check if the name you created appears elsewhere.
Racial, Cultural, or Gender insensitivity
A big NO-NO. Refer to the other materials in the [Inclusivity] section that deal specifically about these topics.
Excessive prepositions
Try your best to avoid the preposition de in names. Make it an adjective instead. Check [Common Issues] for further reference.
"Translation" to Japanese
If the game has no Japanese setting, there is no reason to use Japanese. Chopsticks can't be rendered as hashi and Qixi can't become Tanabata.
THINGS TO BEWARE
Profanity or sexual language
Query the PM about the intended Classind rate. The game developers are aware of Brazilian rating system and can provide the details.
Bad acronyms/abbreviations
Be sure to check if the name would create an odd, offensive, or already commonly-used acronym.
Idioms, slangs and catchphrases
References to idioms and famous catchphrases are welcome, but make sure it fits the tone and setting of the game. An Wuxia character quoting Chaves or an spacefaring alien using lá ele would sounds very off.
THINGS TO DO
Use that rich vocabulay
Synonyms can make a name more unique. As long as it is not a cryptic word, don't be afraid of taking the less beaten path.
Make it shorter
The four-character format is aesthetically pleasant in Chinese, but a four-word name in Portuguese is too verbose. Try combining the meaning into two or three words maximum.
Made-up words are fine, if it fits
Portuguese speakers are constantly reinventing the language, which means that there is plenty of room to combine or change words to make something new. Highly encouraged if it is a fantasy setting.
Use atmospheric word choices
Choosing evocative, mood-inducing words can draw players into the setting of the game, so be sure to take time and think about what sort of world is in the game.
Fun with puns
A well-placed pun can make a game extra fun. Don’t shy away from adding touches of humor when it fits the tone of the game.
