Information and the way that it is retrieved comes in all different forms and methods which is something Information Services I delves into and explains, ranging from basic Boolean searches on Google to in-depth advanced searches on Academic Catalogues. However, the importance of information and the role that staff who are responsible for it take are extremely important to serving the patrons of the library.
In understanding some of the many places that information comes from and the professional competencies staff need to learn and practice in the role of a Reference Desk personnel, it makes the work that goes into libraries so much more than what lies on the surface. Being able to provide patrons answers to questions about anything from dinosaurs to nuclear physics within reason is an important part in any organization that serves the public.
Demonstrate knowledge of the Reference Interview techniques and the ALA Guidelines for Behavioural Performance of Reference and Information Service Providers.
Demonstrate effective use of ready reference sources as itemized in the course description.
Evaluate ready reference sources on content and format using evaluation criteria in support of patron information need.
Apply basic search techniques to retrieve relevant library catalogue and licensed database records.
Apply citation rules from the three main citation styles accurately to crate bibliographic citations.
