Something incredibly important to recognize in cataloguing is that while there are guidelines and standards used across the world, each organization and institution will use different a different Integrated Library System or database to store and organize their collections.
For example, the Librarika ILS that the Nightingale Private Library is hosted through does not have a designated section for Bibliographic Data or records as it is not a requirement for the system to function. Meanwhile, programs like Koha or Library World often focus heavily on the MARC records and their formatting to find a resources' entry into the collection and be able to file it properly.
By being able to understand and use different types of databases and library systems that utilize or ignore bibliographical information in different amounts, it makes it easier to adapt and learn other programs when faced with a challenge.
As libraries and archives continue to adapt and expand to meet their patrons' needs and requirements while also maintaining their focus on the goal of their collection, each will be looking for a different way of hosting or accessing their catalogue. For many larger public libraries, they will use Integrated Library Systems that are the focal point of their online public access point while smaller organizations may choose to use software that can be inserted into a pre-existing access point.
For this assignment, we were tasked with taking a look at an ILS that many libraries of all types around the world use to host and maintain their collection and catalogue three distinctly different resources into a collection of our own. As different types of resources or materials receive specific tags or formatting that others do not, it served as the perfect test of basic cataloguing knowledge and conceptualization. For example, a movie with live-action performances would require tags that credited the contributors and list the capacity to which they supported the film. On the other hand, a book written by a singular author would only need a tag for their credit for writing the work.
In completing this assignment, it was important to take notice of even the smallest details on a written works copyright page or a DVD's case and cover. Furthermore, it was important that the RDA guidelines were followed to the best of my abilities and that the information required for each tag and subfield was entered properly to ensure the items were catalogued to meet the standards.
