Focusing on the functions and impacts of libraries, Introduction to Libraries and Information Retrieval is a course heavily planned around the exploration of types of libraries and the way that information is accessed. As a library student, the most important part of this course was to explore four different types of libraries from both the patron's and staff member's point of view and access. In addition to this, it focuses heavily on learning about the patron bases of the different types of libraries and how they are able to access information within a library. Furthermore, the impact of trends in the community and issues that their patrons and cities may be facing often play a huge role in these places of learning and information, and delving into them can be an important part of the job.
Demonstrate an understanding of the various types and libraries and be able to compare and contrast they way they work and the patrons they support.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of the types of patrons libraries serve and the way that information can be accessed by each type of institution or place of learning.
Be able to identify, analyze and describe the history of libraries and learning institutions and the progress made throughout the years with expanding their collections and patron access.
Be able to identify, analyze and describe the trends and issues that libraries have faced in the past or will see in the future.
Demonstrate an understanding of the Library Technician and other roles within a libraries various departments and organizations.
Identify and demonstrate the essential skills and qualities a Library Technician should possess to be successful in the library and information field of work.
