This is one of my favourite conversions and one that is often admired when I display and run my engines at public events. This is another engine that developed and improved over the duration of the build. The drop-on insulated saddle tank adds some weight and creates a lower centre of gravity. This makes the loco surprisingly stable on track and can give rise to some ridiculous running speeds if you so desire. The boiler is standard Mamod and is gas fired with a modified metal box-type burner that is partially blanked off to avoid sight glass melt-down! There isn't a combustion chamber on this engine. The burner flame is protected by brass angle in the form of running boards. The springs are dummy cast brass and are screwed in place. This engine gets very hot when running and care is needed to ensure the boiler isn't run dry. The first test build of this loco used an MSS wheel set and standard Mamod boiler that I had stripped back to give a polished brass finish. Following testing and some feedback from another modeller I decided to swap the boiler for one with a standard satin black finish. I also took the opportunity to fit Dream Steam Steel Wheels and used my own design of steel wheel insert to improve the looks of the plain disk wheels.
Another video of PJLW No.04 REBECCA can be seen here of this engine running on a layout at one of the L&B Gala events, showing the loco in it's current form.
