The MSR Continental can be built around either a Mamod SL or an MSS locomotive. The simplest option is to start with a built or un-built black SL1K. The black Mamod SL is the original kit version in the model range. The kit loco is nut and bolt construction. However, any of the Mamod SL range can be used as a basis for this conversion. All parts for the Mamod SL range of engines are still available from MSS. So even if your donor engine has some 'issues', you should still be able to sort this with the addition of some new replacement parts. If you use a donor other than the SLK1, it will likely be rivet construction. These will need to be carefully drilled out. The Continental loco requires the complete rolling chassis and associated steam parts, body work, smoke box/stack, boiler, buffers and rear drag beam. The cab roof and rear cab sheet will not be required. Whichever model donor engine you use, the construction principals are the same. Kit assembly instructions are available here and these may also be useful with loco disassembly.
