A child soldier threatens us with a futuristic weapon that is far too large, giving the impression of a toy weapon. But what’s happening around him is clearly no child’s play. A satellite being destroyed. A condominium with a fence clearly indicates: “This is ours and you are not coming in here”.

Radars, transmission towers, and colourful walls evoke the adobes of California’s enclosures, where the richest are already hiding. And a robot, of course, in an overly technological world. But the robot also turns out to be a mobile flamethrower. Because that’s the most striking thing, of course: the auto-da-fé... of the guided ignorant, which I’ll also will read about in the next book, I am sure.

And the worst part for me is that the armed child tramples on the books. In the 17th century, children were still described as blank slates. Today, a controlled schooling system leads to the demonisation of science, the introduction to the written word disappears, and the context around it, which so many have striven so hard for and sacrificed their lives for, is denied to them by the wealthy, literally torpedoing children’s social and intellectual skills.

Een kindsoldaat dreigt met een veel te groot futuristisch wapen, dat daarom bijna de indruk geeft dat het een speelgoedwapen is. Maar wat zich rond hem afspeelt is duidelijk geen kinderspel. Een satelliet die vernietigd wordt. Een condominium met een hekken geeft duidelijk aan: “Dit is van ons en jullie komen hier niet binnen”.

Radars, zendtorens, kleurtjes aan de muur doen denken aan de Adobes van de Californische enclosures waar de rijksten zich nu ook al in verschuilen. En een robot natuurlijk in een overdreven technische wereld. Maar de robot blijkt daarenboven ook een rijdende vlammenwerper te zijn. Want dat is natuurlijk het meest opvallende: de autodafé… van de gestuurde onwetenden, waar ik ook in volgend boek nog over lees.

En het ergste voor mij is eigenlijk dat het gewapende kind de boeken vertrappelt. In de 17e eeuw werd het kind nog als onbeschreven blad beschreven. Vandaag leidt een gecontroleerd onderwijssysteem tot het demoniseren van de wetenschap, de introductie met het geschreven woord verdwijnt en de context errond, waar zovelen zo hard hebben voor gestreefd en hun leven gaven, wordt hen ontzegd door de rijken waardoor de kinderen hun sociale en intellectuele vaardigheden letterlijk torpederen.

Uma criança-soldado ameaça-nos com uma arma futurista grande demais, dando a impressão de ser uma arma de brinquedo. Mas o que acontece a sua volta claramente não é brincadeira de criança. Um satélite está a ser destruído e uma cerca a volta do condomínio indica claramente: “Isto é nosso e tu não entras aqui”.

Radares, torres de transmissão e muros coloridos evocam os Adobes dos recintos na Califórnia, onde os mais ricos já se escondem. E um robô, claro, num mundo excessivamente tecnológico. Mas o robô também se revela um lança-chamas móvel. Porque isso é o mais impressionante, claro: o auto-de-fé… do ignorante manipulado sobre o qual também lerei no próximo livro, tenho certeza.

E o pior para mim é a criança armada pisando os livros. No século XVII, as crianças ainda eram descritas como tábuas rasas. Hoje, um sistema escolar controlado leva a demonizar a ciência. A introdução à palavra escrita pelo qual tantos lutaram tanto e sacrificaram suas vidas desaparece, bem como o contexto em torno dela. É-lhes negado pelos ricos, literalmente torpedeando as habilidades sociais e intelectuais das crianças.
