(Uit de inleiding van Zin in een Babbel) Bob noemde zichzelf soms een Oost-Vlaamse West-Vlaming met Brabantse wortels. Maar hij zou best een wereldburger kunnen genoemd worden. Als iemand daar nog aan twijfelde, dan zullen de teksten in Kosmopolitisme die twijfel wellicht wegnemen.

Alleen, in de rust van zijn werkkamer, maar ook met zijn trouwe vrienden- kring, een echte Portugese tertúlia - de laatste jaren waren ze maar met zijn tweeën meer - filosofeerde hij over vele aspecten van het mens-zijn. Onder de discussieonderwerpen was er een vast weerkerend thema: de godsdienst. Als overtuigd agnost trad hij trouwens voortdurend in gesprek met gelovigen en niet gelovigen, met Christenen, Moslims en Joden. Hij wilde als het om levenshouding ging nooit iemand overtuigen van gelijk of ongelijk, maar hij maakte er wel een persoonlijke zoektocht van om te proberen te begrijpen hoe anderen op een andere wijze betekenis gaven aan wat hem ook betekenisvol leek. Die zoektocht nam hem ook dikwijls mee naar zijn kinder- en jeugdjaren.  De wereld van Bob en Die gedanken sind frei getuigen hiervan.

(From the introduction to Zin in een Babbel) Bob sometimes called himself a West Flemish from East Flandres with Brabant roots. But he could well be called a citizen of the world. If anyone still doubts, the texts in Cosmopolitanism may dispel that doubt.

Alone, in the tranquility of his study, but also with his loyal circle of friends, a true Portuguese tertúlia - in recent years there were only two of them - he philosophised about many aspects of being human. Among the topics of discussion there was a fixed recurring theme: religion. As a convinced agnostic, he entered into constant conversation with believers and non-believers, with Christians, Muslims and Jews. He never wanted to convince anyone of what is thought was right or wrong when it came to attitude to life, but he made it a personal quest to try to understand how others gave meaning in a different way to what also seemed meaningful to him. That quest often took him back to his childhood and youth. The world of Bob and Die gedanken sind frei bear witness to this.

(Da introdução de Zin em um Babbel) Às vezes, Bob autodenominava-se um Flamengo ocidental da Flandres Oriental com raízes no Brabão. Mas ele poderia muito bem ser descrito como cidadão do mundo. Se alguém ainda duvida, os textos sob o título Cosmpolitismo podem fazer desaparecer essa dúvida.

Sozinho, na tranquilidade do seu escritório, mas também com o seu fiel círculo de amigos, uma verdadeira tertúlia portuguesa - nos últimos anos já só eram apenas dois - filosofou sobre muitos aspectos de o que é ser humano. Entre os temas de discussão havia um assunto recorrente: a religião. Como agnóstico convicto, dialogava constantemente com crentes e não crentes, com cristãos, muçulmanos e judeus. Ele nunca quis convencer ninguém do que pensava estar certo ou errado quando se trata de atitude perante a vida, mas chamou a si  como busca pessoal tentar entender como outros davam de forma diferente significado ao que também lhe parecia significativo. Essa busca muitas vezes o levou de volta à sua infância e juventude. O mundo de Bob e Die gedanken sind frei testemunham-no.
