Preparing for your appointments is one of the most important parts of helping your student. As you prepare, you will gain confidence that you can answer any questions the student has. Students will notice your preparation and be grateful that you came prepared. Here are some ways to prepare for your appointments:
Read over the appointment information carefully. Make sure you understand what the student is needing and what questions they have.
Pull up student information
Knowledge Base
REACH
Anthology
About 24 hours before the appointment, send the student a link to your Zoom room, if the student has asked for a video call.
Registration Issues – Assistance with course registration and troubleshooting technical issues related to the registration system.
General Advising Questions – Guidance on degree requirements, course planning, student schedules, and academic policies.
Graduation Reviews – A review of your degree progress audit to ensure you are on track for graduation.
To schedule a phone call with an academic advisor:
Log into the Help Center.
Create a new support ticket.
Select "Meet with an Academic Advisor" in the Product/Service dropdown menu.
Say a prayer before going into an appointment. The Spirit will help you understand and answer questions.
Have a calm and respectful attitude/manner. Be empathetic and professional.
It is okay to say, “I don’t know but I can find out and follow up with you.”
You can also say "I can look this is up for you."
Write things down and make notes.
“If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear.” (D&C 38:30)
Advisors cannot determine how credits from other institutions will transfer. Students starting in 2025 or later will follow the three-year degree structure, which does not require elective credits. Transfer credits will only apply if they have a direct equivalent.
The following video is a recording of a meeting between the Student Success team and the Advising ASAs. The beginning of the meeting is an FAQ. Bookings and appointment training starts at 18 minutes.
