The 2 examples below show what a complete STARR response might look like. It concerns a situation at work, but the same structure can also be used for study or private life.
Tell me about a situation where you had to complete a task with a tough conversation and how you handled it.
(1) I worked as a customer service representative for a medium-sized organization (S2). (2) During a busy period, we received many complaints about a new billing module (S7). (3) One Monday afternoon, I received a call from an angry customer who had already called three times without a solution (S1). (4) The queue was long, and my colleagues were visibly tense (S8).
(1) My task was to help this customer as best I could, de-escalate the situation, and find a workable solution (T2/ T3). (2) I also wanted to prevent the customer from having to call again and wanted to determine whether there was a broader problem in the process (T7).
(1) I started by listening calmly and letting the customer finish speaking (A2). (2) Then I briefly summarized what I had heard and acknowledged his frustration (A5). (3) I explained that I wanted to resolve the issue properly in one go and asked for permission to access his file (A3). (4) I then checked the previous contact moments and the error in the system (A1). (5) I briefly consulted with the financial administration department to check what options were available (A9). (6) I proposed a concrete solution to the customer (A5). (7) The error in the invoice was corrected immediately, and I promised to send a confirmation email with the correct details within an hour (A1). (8) I also gave the customer a direct phone number in case something else went wrong (A5). (9) After the conversation, I recorded the process in the CRM system and mentioned in the team meeting that same week that this type of error occurred frequently (A8). (10) Together with a colleague, I drew up a short step-by-step plan for how we could recognize and handle these types of reports more quickly in the future (A8).
(1) The customer calmed down during the conversation and thanked us at the end for the clear explanation and quick action (R1.a/ R3.a). (2) The adjusted invoice was sent that same afternoon, and there were no further complaints from this customer (R2.a). (3) Within the team, the shared step-by-step plan ensured that similar reports were resolved more quickly in the weeks that followed (R4.a). (4) My manager indicated that she appreciated me bringing up the case and working with a colleague to turn it into an improvement action (R3.a).
(1) Looking back, I am pleased that I took the time to listen and summarize first (R7.b/ R10.b). (2) That calmed the conversation (R3.b). (3) It also worked well to contact the administration immediately instead of scheduling a callback (R11.b). (4) At the same time, I noticed that I also became curt at the beginning of the conversation due to the pressure of the queue (R5.b). (5) Next time, I want to be even more conscious of keeping my own pace slow, even when the pressure is high (R12.b). (6) Based on this STARR reflection, I have formulated one development goal for myself (R13.b). (7) In the next two months, I want to consciously take one deep breath before responding to difficult conversations and briefly note down what went well and what I can do differently next time after each conversation (R8.b). (8) In this way, I will use these kinds of situations not only to solve problems, but also to strengthen my communication skills step by step (R4.b).
Imagine you get asked: “How do you handle strict deadlines?” Using the STARR method, you would answer this question as follows:
During my time at university, particularly during my graduation project involving data analysis, I faced multiple deadlines for different parts of the project.
It was my responsibility to gather and analyse data and report on it within a set timeline.
To manage the project effectively, I created a plan with clear milestones. I ensured regular check-ins with my supervisor to discuss my progress and receive feedback. Additionally, I utilised project management tools to keep track of what tasks remained and when each task needed to be completed.
I completed all aspects of my graduation project on time and received positive feedback on my project management skills and the quality of my research. My graduation project was graded at 8.5 out of 10.
This experience taught me the importance of good planning and organisation when working under pressure.

Take a moment to think about your answer before diving in.
Use specific examples from your experience.
Be concise while including all the key details.
Use “I” statements to focus on your role in the situation.
Include Reflection where it makes sense—what did you learn, and how have you applied it since?
Don’t rush into your answer without organizing your thoughts.
Avoid hypothetical examples—stick to real experiences.
Don’t assume the interviewer knows the context—be clear and specific.
Avoid overly vague “we” statements that downplay your individual contributions.
