Engages the client and helps them identify their own reasons for wanting to make a change
Elements of MI
Spirit: partnership, evocation, acceptance, & compassion
OARS: open-ended questions, affirmation, reflective listening, summarizing
Change Talk: desire, ability, reason, need

Transtheoretical Model:
Precontemplation: no mention of changing behavior
Contemplation: aware a problem exists but not committed to change
Planning & Preparation: intends to take action to change
Action: executing a plan to modify behavior
Maintenance: sustaining changes & developing new behavior
Relapse: return to old ways
