OVERVIEW :
Esomeprazole, sold under the brand name Nexium, is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication used for the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), for gastric protection to prevent recurrence of stomach ulcers or gastric damage from chronic use of NSAIDs, and for the treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions including Zollinger-Ellison (ZE) Syndrome. It can also be found in quadruple doses for the treatment of H. pylori infections along with other antibiotics including Amoxicillin, Clarithromycin, and Metronidazole, for example. Its efficacy is considered similar to other drugs within the PPI class including Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, Lansoprazole, Dexlansoprazole, and Rabeprazole. Esomeprazole is the s-isomer of Omeprazole, which is a racemate of the S- and R-enantiomer. Esomeprazole has been shown to inhibit acid secretion to a similar amount as Omeprazole, without any major differences between the two compounds in vitro.
Esomeprazole performs its stomach acid-suppressing effects by preventing the final step in gastric acid production by covalently binding to sulfhydryl groups of cysteines found on the (H+, K+)-ATPase enzyme at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells. This action leads to inhibition of both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion, independent of the stimulus. As the binding of esomeprazole to the (H+, K+)-ATPase enzyme is irreversible and new enzyme needs to be expressed in order to resume acid secretion, esomeprazole's duration of antisecretory effect continues longer than 24 hours.
USES OF ESOMEPRAZOLE
Esomeprazole lowers the amount of acid your stomach makes.
BENEFITS OF ESOMEPRAZOLE
To handle indigestion, heartburn and acid reflux, and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) – a condition which means you keep getting acid reflux prevent stomach ulcers
Sometimes, esomeprazole is taken for a rare disease caused by a tumour in the pancreas or gut called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
SIDE EFFECTS OF ESOMEPRAZOLE
Headache or abdominal pain may appear. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Tell your doctor right away if you have any dangerous side effects, including: symptoms of a low magnesium blood level (such as muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, seizures), signs of lupus (such as rash on nose and cheeks, new or worsening joint pain).
DIRECTION OF USE OF ESOMEPRAZOLE
Usually take esomeprazole once a day, first thing in the morning. You can take it with or without food. If you take esomeprazole twice a day, take 1 dose in the morning and 1 dose in the evening.
HOW ESOMEPRAZOLE WORKS
Esomeprazole is a type of medicine called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Proton pumps are enzymes in the walls of your stomach that help it make acid to digest food. Esomeprazole stops proton pumps from working properly.
