OVERVIEW
Topical preparations such as Neosporin (neomycin/polymyxin B/bacitracin) are commonly used to apply neomycin. If the antibiotic is taken orally, it is typically taken in combination with other antibiotics. Neomycin has been utilized as a prophylactic treatment for hypercholesterolemia and hepatic encephalopathy as it is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal system. Neomycin, especially prior to gastrointestinal surgery, lowers ammonia levels and avoids hepatic encephalopathy by eliminating microorganisms in the digestive tract.
USES OF NEOMYCIN
This drug is used to lower the possibility of infection following specific intestinal procedures. Neomycin is a member of the aminoglycoside antibiotics pharmacological class. It functions by preventing intestinal bacterial development. Neomycin may also be used in conjunction with a certain diet to treat a serious brain condition known as hepatic encephalopathy. This illness is brought on by an excess of a certain natural chemical called ammonia. Ammonia is normally eliminated by the liver; however, liver dysfunction can lead to an accumulation of ammonia in the body. By eliminating specific intestinal bacteria that produce ammonia, this drug aids in the treatment of encephalopathy. Only bacterial illnesses are treated by this antibiotic. For viral illnesses, like the flu or the common cold, it is ineffective.
BENEFITS OF NEOMYCIN
1. Preventing Intestinal Bacterial Infections: The treatment for intestinal bacterial infections is neomycin. It aids in lowering the risk of infection by eliminating bacteria in the stomach.
2. Hepatic Coma Symptom Reduction: Neomycin is also used to lessen hepatic coma symptoms. It aids in the elimination of intestinal bacteria that cause brain-damaging toxins in hepatic coma patients. Some of the symptoms related to this illness can be alleviated by eliminating these pollutants.
3. Preoperative Use: Neomycin is given prior to some bowel surgery in order to eradicate gut microorganisms and stop bacterial infections.
SIDE EFFECTS OF NEOMYCIN
1. Preventing Intestinal Bacterial Infections: Neomycin is the medication used to treat intestinal bacterial infections. It helps reduce the chance of infection by getting rid of gut bacteria.
2. Hepatic Coma Symptom Reduction: Neomycin is another medication used to reduce the symptoms of hepatic coma. It helps people in hepatic comas get rid of intestinal bacteria that produce toxins that damage their brains. By getting rid of these contaminants, some of the symptoms associated with this illness can be reduced.
3. Preoperative Use: To get rid of gut germs and stop bacterial infections, neomycin is used before some bowel surgeries.
2. 1. Rarely, severe kidney issues and nerve damage brought on by this medicine may result in irreversible hearing loss (including deafness or diminished hearing) and issues with balance. Even those without kidney issues who are taking the recommended dosages may have these severe adverse effects. It is possible for hearing issues to persist even after stopping neomycin. If you have renal disease already, are older, or have severely dehydrated yourself, your risk is higher. Additionally, receiving high doses or using this medication for an extended period of time increases your risk. Your doctor's careful observation, which may involve testing for kidney, urine, and hearing, will lower the possibility of these adverse effects. Steer clear of additional drugs that, when used with neomycin, could raise your risk of experiencing these severe adverse effects (See also Drug Interactions section). In the event that you experience any of these severe adverse effects—such as ringing or roaring in the ears, hearing loss, dizziness, or an unexpected decrease in urine production—notify your doctor straight once.
3. Rarely, severe respiratory and muscular issues may also arise.
