Loratadine is a tricyclic antihistamine with a lengthy half-life that binds to histamine H1 receptors rather selectively. Loratadine appears to function as effectively as azatadine, cetirizine, chlorpheniramine, clemastine, hydroxyzine, mequitazine, and terfenadine when used to treat allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria. It also functions more quickly than astemizole. When used as prescribed, it acts fast, only needs one dose per day, and causes very little sedation. Loratadine has not been found to cause ventricular arrhythmias.
Loratadine is used to temporarily relieve symptoms of hay fever, which is an allergy to dust, pollen, or other airborne particles, as well as other allergens. These symptoms include a runny nose, itchy eyes, nose, or throat. Another is sneezing. Loratadine is also used to relieve redness and itching associated with hives.
