OVERVIEW
An antifungal drug called ketoconazole is used to treat specific fungal infections.
Ketoconazole should only be taken in cases where other antifungal drugs are not effective. Ketoconazole has the potential to seriously damage your liver, necessitating a liver transplant or perhaps death.
It is not recommended to use ketoconazole to treat fungal infections of the toenails or fingernails. Additionally, this medication should not be used to treat Cushing syndrome or prostate cancer.
USES OF KETOCONAZOLE
In order to treat some severe fungal infections in the body, ketoconazole is administered. Ketoconazole is a member of the azole antifungals medication class. It functions by halting the fungus's growth.Because of the potential for major adverse effects and drug interactions, ketoconazole should not be used to treat fungal infections of the skin or nails. See your doctor about additional drugs that can be used to treat infections of this kind.
BENEFITS OF KETOCONAZOLE
1. Treatment for Dandruff: For severe cases of dandruff, ketoconazole shampoo, which is available over-the-counter (OTC) and through prescription, is frequently used. It functions by lessening the irritation and fungi that cause dandruff. Ketoconazole is present in well-known brands like Nizoral.
2. Psoriasis: Ketoconazole is a useful treatment for people with psoriasis, an inflammatory skin disorder marked by skin flaking, redness, and plaques. Ketoconazole prescription may be required during psoriasis flare-ups.
3. Tinea Infections: Ketoconazole shampoo is effective in treating tinea versicolor, a skin infection brought on by an overabundance of naturally occurring yeast on the skin, and tinea capitis, a superficial fungus infection that resembles ringworm but affects the scalp.
4. Hair Loss: Ketoconazole is mainly used as an antifungal medication, but anecdotal evidence suggests that it may also slow down or stop hair loss. According to a short pilot trial, ketoconazole may help alopecia patients regrow their hair.
SIDE EFFECTS OF KETOCONAZOLE
There may be vomiting and nausea. Notify your pharmacist or doctor right away if any of these side effects persist or worsen. Recall that your doctor has prescribed this medication because they believe it will benefit you more than it will cause negative side effects. Many users of this medicine report no significant adverse effects. If you have any severe side effects, such as a headache, changes in eyesight, or changes in your mental or emotional state (such as sadness or suicidal thoughts), notify your doctor straight once. When ketoconazole is used at high doses, it may, albeit improbable, result in decreased testosterone levels, sperm production, and an issue with the adrenal glands (adrenal insufficiency). Additionally, ketoconazole may exacerbate pre-existing issues with adrenal gland function (see also the precautions section). The issue with your adrenal glands could make it harder for your body to react to physical stress. Inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking this drug before undergoing surgery or receiving emergency care, or if you suffer a major sickness or accident. While you are taking ketoconazole, your doctor can prescribe a blood test to check on the health of your adrenal glands. Usually, these side effects disappear when the ketoconazole treatment is discontinued. If you have any severe side effects, such as: unexplained fatigue, weakness, lightheadedness while standing, diarrhea, weight loss, irregular menstrual cycles, decreased desire or ability to engage in sexual activities, or enlarged/tender breasts in men, promptly notify your doctor.
HOW TO USE KETOCONAZOLE
Ketoconazole is used for short-term treatment. However, sometimes it needs to be taken for several months. Ketoconazole comes with risks if you don’t take it as prescribed.
