Air bubbles inside me grow
Rise to the top
Excitement
Pop out in squeals of delight
Yes
YES
It’s finally happening
The lock turned
The door opened
We are going outside
We are going OUTSIDE
I’ve waited through the hot months
Skin burning
Dry heat summer
Indoors
It’s October, they tell me
Chilling breeze
Never felt before
My feet stamp
Dance
In anticipation
My hands release the doorframe
This first step into
The unknown
But before I can
Take another
I’m held back
Arms tugging
Keeping me inside
Why can’t I move?
Something wraps around me
Constricting
Halting
My plans ruined
Dreams shattered
In an instant
Air bubbles have turned
To lava bubbles
Rise to the top
Red hot
No
NO
The words erupt
A volcano of emotion
I bellow what I’ve learned to say:
“NO JACKET!”
But they do not take it off
Because I am
22
Months old
