Her First Choice
by Vogue Robinson
Please, don't think ill of her
Because her estimates of time vs. distance
Are always miscalculated
See, she traverses this corporation
Of ancient and modern architecture
Gazes upon clock towers
As their chimes
Resonate in her memory
And remind her of why
This was her first choice
Her favorite sight?
The blossoming multicultural flowers
Which despite the oppressive weeds
That often restrict the amount of knowledge They are allowed be cultivated with,
Continue to develop
And they inspire her to do the same
Huff-ing and puff-ing over an overpass
Which once symbolized the spotlit set where
Her entrance onto a new stage
Of life would begin…
Now only serves as an obstacle to overcome
In the beaming heat
In order to arrive at her desired location.
Dodging through traffic in the center
Of the Aztec's beating heart
Making her way through halls
Filled with storms of students
Climbing her way up flights of stairs
Seemingly-endless-stairs
Only to be greeted by keyless locks
That block the final pathway to her destination:
The 3'' floor of Storm Hall,
She took the wrong stairway.
More often than not, I'm late to class.
But please, don't think ill of me.
