Chris Baron is the Sydney Taylor Book Award winning author of books in verse for young readers. He is currently appearing at the Texas Library Association's Annual Conference and is unable to share a poem after all! So I went ahead and took the liberty of stepping in to post the poem I'd already written to share at this evening's reading, and wouldn't ya know, it focuses on the Number Nineteen! Spooky! Hats off to Chris Baron, remarkable talent, wonderful human. His latest release is On All Other Nights, an anthology on the theme of Passover. While we are at it, for all who celebrate, may you have an easy fast this weekend.
Round Up
by Jen Nails
Let’s round up.
Keep the change.
I gotchu!
Gather
your shattered heart
and round
up.
Penny jars and plans,
nickels, nickels, nickels.
Pushpins piled near the National Parks map,
sock it away.
You’re more than your word count,
than how tall you are,
than how that one interview went.
Round up!
Rise in elevation,
19 pushpins on the map
(and counting).
Born on the 19th,
1973,
lived 19 years in New York City,
19 rejections from the yes.
Gather
your poets and drummers and chefs,
scribble lines
keep time
drink wine
reach prime.
You’re whole,
you’re odd,
you’re a fraction of who you will be.
Round up.
Gather.
Rise!
