Twelve
By K.L. Going
the year of plastic glasses
lopsided haircut
oversized sweaters
in shades of old bubblegum
the year of hunched shoulders
abdominal cramps
one single zit
on the tip of my nose
the year of trying too hard
to be noticed
to pass undetected
to be the same, but different
the year of wishing away
time, longing for
promised potential
pining for the future,
any future
the year of why
the year of what will happen
the year of will I ever
the year of contractions
life fully dilated, panting
pushing out
a fully formed
person struggling
to emerge.
