One
by Cathleen Davitt Bell
One stands in lonely triumph
On a lonely podium
One above all
The scientist’s miracle: Nothing to one
Life - my podcast tells me - was a miracle
If you think of things in that way
A windless rain
One drop on a pond in the park where I walk the dog while listening to the podcast
Then many drops
The rushing dog
The ping the pin the splash
One
We walk erect, waiting
We stand as one
and attend the hope of two
The new we strain to hear in our return
An echo fading
The issue with 1 to 2 (my podcast tells me) is energy
Who has ATP for more than oneself?
My dog runs - I watch with a leaping joy
My podcast - I listen alone - calls the odds of 2 infinitesimal
Like…small.
A distant tiny prick of light - a sign of something
If you think of somethings in that way
i like the podcast with one thumb
a pin - a ping
An echo, straining for the miracle
The pin the drop the win the wave
one one one one one
