Unit 07 Mixtures: Solutions, Suspensions, and Colloids
I understand that medical diagnosis and recycling depend on separating mixtures.
“I can” Statements:
07-01 a: Classify materials as solutions (homogeneous mixtures), suspensions, and colloids (heterogeneous mixtures).
07-01 b: Compare and contrast the properties of solutions, suspensions, and colloids including particle size, presence of Tyndall effect, tendency to settle out and clarity.
07-01 c: Define alloy and give examples of alloys.
Target 07 - 02 The student will use physical properties to separate a mixture.
“I can” Statements:
07-02 a: Describe how solutions, suspensions, colloids, and other mixtures could be separated using their physical properties.
Target 07 - 03 The student will describe the process of dissolving and factors that affect its rate.
“I can” Statements:
07-03 a: Model the process of a solid dissolving in a liquid, a gas dissolving in a liquid, and a liquid dissolving in a liquid.
07-03 b: Explain how factors such as temperature, surface area, agitation, pressure, and concentration affect the rate at which dissolving occurs.
07-03 c: Explain what occurs during solution equilibrium.
07-03 d: Explain the expression “Like dissolves like”
“I can” Statements:
07-04 a: Distinguish between solute, solvent and solution.
07-04 b: Calculate concentration of a solution, mass of solute, and volume of solvent.
07-04 c: Calculate Molarity (M) of a solution, amount of solute in moles, and volume of a Molar solution.
07-04 d: Interpret a solubility graph for the amount of substance that will dissolve, whether or not the solution will be saturated or unsaturated, and predict the possible phase of matter.
Targets that are reemphasized:
Target 02-03 Use graphs and math to compare variables.
Concentration of Solutions
Molarity of solutions
Solubility graphs
Target 03-02 Use the SI system to express measurements accurately and precisely.
