Unit 07 Chapter 07: Chemical Formulas and Chemical Compounds
I understand that reading and writing the chemistry language for compounds will help me figure out what materials are made of.
7A Nomenclature
Target 07-01 Name compounds and write formulas for chemical compounds.
“I can” statements:
07-01 a. Name and write the formulas for the seven diatomic elements.
07-01 b. Name and write formulas for binary ionic compounds.
07-01 c. Name and write formulas for ionic compounds with multivalent cations using the Stock System.
07-01 d. Determine the oxidation number of an atom.
07-01 e. Give the oxidation number for each element in the formula of a chemical compound or radical.
07-01 f. Name and write formulas for compounds with radicals.
07-01 g. Name and write formulas for covalent compounds using both the Greek and Stock Systems.
07-01 h. Name and write formulas for binary acids and oxyacids.
07-01 i. Name the salts formed from acid/base reactions and name the acid that formed the salt.
07-01 j. Name and write formulas for hydrated salts.
7B Composition Stoichiometry
“I can” statements:
07-02 a. Calculate the formula mass or molar mass of a given compound.
07-02 b. Use molar mass to convert between mass in grams and amount in moles of a chemical compound..
07-02 c. Calculate the number of grams, molecules, formula units, or ions in a given amount of a chemical compound.
Target 07-03 Use percent composition to analyze a formula.
“I can” statements:
07-03 a. Calculate the percentage composition of a given chemical compound
Target 07-04 Determine empirical and molecular formulas.
“I can” statements:
07-04 a. Determine the empirical formula of a compound from either a percentage or a mass composition.
07-07 b. Explain the relationship between an empirical formula and the molecular formula of a compound.
07-04 c. Determine the molecular formula from an empirical formula and molar mass of a compound.
07-04 d. Determine the empirical formula of a compound from lab data.
Target 01 - 02 Use symbols for ions and identify ions from their symbols.
Target 02 - 04 Use dimensional analysis to solve chemistry problems.
