Fitness for life is designed to be an awesome sixty days for 7th and 8th grade students Kennedy Middle School. The program, which will last one trimester, focuses on helping students live healthier lives and improving their ability to learn. Much of the curriculum is based on the research compiled by John Ratey, M.D. (Harvard Medical School) and his book, SPARK: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. The research demonstrates that when students participate in moderate to high intensity aerobic activities there are several health benefits including improving student cognition and executive functioning. Above is a picture of what happens in a student’s brain after exercise. Note the significant increase in brain activity or“readiness to learn” (Hillman).
While students are introduced to an array of physical activities, they will use heart rate monitors to observe their working intensity. At the conclusion of the course, many students will see a significant improvement in at least one area of the five major fitness elements in addition to the benefits of their executing functioning. Many students will see a transformation in their mood, attention span, organization and motivation with the daily activity that is provided in Fitness for Life. Students are challenged to push their limits in a safe and inviting atmosphere where students learn and utilize modifications needed for any and all exercises. Students personal achievement and consistent effort is celebrated as each students aims to improve their personal best.
