HRM at the High School

Heart Rate Monitors at the High School are used in many different ways.  These ways will depend on the class that a student is enrolled in.

Awake PE - This class uses heart rate monitors every class.  There is a major focus on earning time in "zone" and understanding the theory behind why that is important as it relates to physical, emotional, and academic areas.

Wellness I - This is our intro level wellness class that is typically offered to incoming freshmen.  Heart rate monitors are used as part of a large multi-week unit.  This unit will focus on how heart rate is an indicator of intensity, how heart rate can be used as a measure of fitness, and how exercising in target heart rate zones can offer a variety of benefits in many areas.

Wellness II - This is a continuation from the theory discussed in Wellness I.  Heart rate monitors are also used as a large multi-week unit in this class.  Deeper exploration of heart rate and how it relates to exercise intensity is discussed and subsequently put into practice.  Aerobic vs. anaerobic forms of exercise as well as high intensity interval training are training methodologies utilized during this unit.

Electives - We offer various electives in the wellness curriculum at NHS.  The use of heart rate monitors depends on the class and is typically a tool to supplement instruction or to gauge intensity during a workout.
