Problem
The computer does not power on when the power button is pressed.
Symptoms
No lights or display appear.
The power button does not respond.
The computer makes no sound.
The screen remains black.
Fans do not spin or stop immediately after starting.
A single fan spins briefly for 1-2 seconds, then stops completely.
Possible Causes
Power cable is loose or disconnected.
Battery is completely drained (laptops).
Faulty power outlet or power strip.
Power supply unit (PSU) failure.
Faulty RAM or internal hardware.
Motherboard failure.
Overheating protection has shut down the computer.
Faulty front panel power button or its connector (desktop computers).
Dead or failing CMOS battery.
A short circuit caused by a loose screw, cable, or component touching the case.
Resolution
Step 1 — Verify that the power cable is securely connected to both the computer and the wall outlet.
Step 2 — Check that the wall outlet is working by plugging in another device.
Step 3 — If using a laptop, connect the charger and allow the battery to charge for at least 15 minutes before trying again.
Step 4 — Press and hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds, then press it again to start the computer.
Step 5 — Disconnect all external devices, including USB drives, printers, and external hard drives. Try turning on the computer again.
Step 6 — If the computer powers on but the screen remains black, ensure the monitor is turned on and the display cable is securely connected.
Step 7 — Listen for beep codes or observe blinking indicator lights. These may indicate hardware problems such as faulty RAM or motherboard issues.
Step 8 — If the computer still does not turn on, inspect the power supply (desktop) or test with a known working charger (laptop). Replace the faulty component if necessary.
Step 9 — For desktops, open the case and reseat the RAM modules by removing and firmly reinserting them. Loose RAM is a common cause of no-power or no-boot symptoms.
Step 10 — Check the front panel power button cable connection on the motherboard. If comfortable doing so, try briefly shorting the power switch pins directly with a screwdriver to rule out a faulty button.
Step 11 — Inspect inside the case for loose screws, damaged cables, or any signs of a short circuit (burnt smell, scorch marks). Do not power on the system if damage is visible.
Step 12 (renumbered from original Step 9) — If the issue persists after completing these steps, contact your IT support team or a qualified computer technician for further diagnosis.
Prevention
Use a surge protector to protect against power fluctuations.
Keep the computer clean to prevent overheating.
Avoid pulling the power cable from the computer while it is running.
Regularly inspect power cables and chargers for damage.
Shut down the computer properly after use.
Avoid touching internal components without proper anti-static precautions to prevent short circuits.
