Use the 9 box rule.
Title in upper box
The center most box grabs attention. Put part of illustration there if possible. It will grab attention. E.g the bandaid sqaure in Art Trouble made a reviewer think she about division/subtration.
Titile
Striking
Primary Colors
Do not clutter with art in the back/top.
Fonts - Non Designer's Design and Type Book - Robin Williams
Use contrast for color
Fat fonts should not be filled in. E.g Art Trouble looked better without filling ART
Use contrast in fonts but within same theme. Dont mix themes.
E.g Mukta Malar was too formal with Chaloops was playful. This is a contrast. But didn't work. Use two playful fonts. E.g Blockhead OT worked well with Challoops even though they were different.
Use Non Designer's Design and Type Book - Robin Williams
Subtitile
Needs to be big to read.
Illustration
Add some movement. Swirls, leaves, clouds, character body...
Keep movement flowing to the right.
Background should be that... subtle.
Main characters should be bigger than objects they are interacting with.
Author
At bottom. Blend with background. Smaller than sub tititle for starting author.
Series
Can be on top or corners
Back of Cover
Have a blurb about Book
Have other books

Kindle Book EPUB https://youtu.be/CZnQZ-QvZGg?si=AH6SuM8jvtdQjW_g
My book has been formatted and I’m now working through the respective IS (hardcover, ebook) and KDP (paperback) sites.
I’ve seen some posts saying that it was better to publish thru KDP first, then IS, but other posts state the opposite, which makes sense to me since IS takes longer.
I haven’t gotten thru all tabs, but can someone explain how it works to get the (paperback and hardcover) proofs and the approval process for each?
I understand KDP takes roughly two weeks for review and I assume sending the paperback proof. Does IS keep you apprised of the progresss, so that I’ll know approximately when I’ll receive my offset copies? Just thinking about timing for release dates, which I know will be approximate.
Annswer: Sleeping Cat Books:
If you want to use both KDP and IS for the same ISBN,
Set up the project on both platforms through entering the ISBN, then save that project as a draft on both platforms.
Do *not* enable KDP Expanded Distribution. This will disallow IS publication.
Once that ISBN is in both systems, you can proceed with publishing in whichever order you like without either claiming the ISBN is already in use.https://selfpublishingadvice.org/can-i-use-ingramspark-and-kdp/
KDP doesn't do pre-orders for print, just ebooks. But yes, you can order a printed proof *before* publishing with KDP. Just be careful you click the right link. The proof order is a text link, not a button. See page 11 of https://sleepingcatbooks.com/.../2021/07/KDP_Print_Guide.pdf.
Vickie Weber: Technical: Use Ingramspark to do Pre-Order for Both Soft and HardCover, they need separate ISBNs.
Use your own ISBN. With a single author owned ISBN you can print both on IS and KDP for paperback using AMS.
Upload KDP paperback, 2 days before Launch so you can run Amazon ads to it.
You need to advertize the Pre-Order and build Hype around it.
In Ingram Spark
Set both sale/publication and launch date as the same date. Has to be 4-6 weeks out.
Single link sent to Launch team. IS will link to the Amazon Ebook Pre-Order as well. It will only sync with Amazon after you APPROVE proofs in IS.

CONCLUSIONS
I'm very happy my ratings increased from 16 to 96 (400% increase)
I'm very happy the Amazon UK listing now has 10 reviews, up from just 1 because I'm now able to advertise my book in the UK and get (and have) conversions. This has opened up a new sales channel for the book.
I'm happy with 48 ratings and 26 reviews on Goodreads and a rating of 4.46.
I'm disappointed by the 3 and 1 star review on Amazon.com. Amazon still rates the book 4.8 out of 5, so they didn't do too much damage. The only annoying thing is that Amazon displays those two reviews on the first page of reviews.
I'm happy that 10,087 potential customers now know more about the book, some of whom have or will go on to buy the hardcover or paperback edition.
78 ratings from 10,087 is a rating rate of 0.77%. Authors often quote a review rate of 1%, so that's not too far off.
I did notice a small bump in sales during those 5 days, but not as many as I had hoped for.
Would I do it again? 100% YES! I have spent more and received a lot less, on Facebook for example.
#1 TIP
I would do 5 x 1 day promos (Amazon allow 5 days per 3 months) instead of using up the 5 days all at once. This would allow me to better track how many downloads a particular promo referred. It would also produce more ebook sales. I ran free ebook download promos with an older title, and noticed people buying the book because they went to the page a day after the free download had ended. It was priced at $0.99, and I guess that's just a no brainer impulse buy for that price.
I hope you found this case study useful. If you did, please LIKE this post to indicate you'd like more posts like this, and GIVE SOME LOVE BACK by trying my I WISH YOU HAPPINESS book on piccopuppy.com and Amazon. Thanks!
Let me know if you have any questions.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently ran a freebooksy.com promo on both of my books and wanted to share a little about how it went.
-In case you never heard of it, you pay ($45 for the children’s genre list) to have your book featured in one of their daily free ebook emails. These go out to many thousands of people and can help with book exposure. You have to pair it up with one of your free ebook days if you are enrolled with kindle unlimited.
-Is it worth it? The jury is still out. During the two days my books were free I had over 800 downloads on each of my books. This caused me to hit #1 spots in many categories. I saw some paperback sales as a result but not nearly as many I hoped. It also hasn’t generated many extra reviews (yet).
-A pleasant surprise: many days after this promotion including up to today, my books continue to rank fairly high on the kindle platform (#36,029 for of them this morning). I believe this is because amazon’s algorithms must be suggesting my books on a higher level on KU which has made my page read stay much higher than before these promotions. I hope this leads to more paperback sales in the near future if kids are enjoying the books.
At the end of the day, if you believe in your book and need more exposure, it might be worth a try, even if that means losing money at first. Hope this helps!
