ART TROUBLE
"The essence of mathematics lies in its freedom." - Georg Cantor
When we think of imagination and freedom of expression we think of Art, perhaps music and dance. Nobody even remotely thinks of Math.
ART TROUBLE is a hilarious story that makes the connection between Art and Math by personalizing the unique artistic abilities of the Numbers. It tells a witty story of team building where the Numbers work together to create something marvelous. In the process the Numbers learn that when they are not attached to their ideas, their minds become FREE to imagine greater things.
The story effortlessly connects Math and Art to opens young minds to the fascinating world of pattern recognition and team building as valuable tools in problem solving. The story weaves around the four stages of psychological development a team goes through namely Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing (FSNP) as they work together to bring to life - a project that is beyond their individual imagination.

Problems of Big Numbers
2 feels very small. She wants to be bigger than 8. She asks for her friend 0's help. He brings her a magic ladder called Place value where each step is for each place value. 2 feels great . Magic always comes with a price. The Place value ladder wants tangible things in return. She needs to turn the number into something tangible for the world to see.
She gets really big. She starts with 20flowers. She is excited to make 200 butterflies. They make 2000 caterpillars ? She doesnt know how to organize them. They are running everywhere and causing havoc. So the comma comes in. to take care of the caterpillars she makes 20000 chickens.. 20000 chickens lay 200000 eggs! She doesn't want them to explode into chickens, so she needs to find out what to do!
Why didnt you make trees? We could have solved a world problem? Or grass? Humans love to mow them? You could have given so many bald men some hair! Instead you made flowers?
She really wants to become 2 again. Does she go down the ladder? How does she reduce things? By division? What does she make with eggs? A cake? What does she end up with?
She contacts 10 bakeries, 10 supermarkets, 10 icecream stores, she dug 10 secret spots for easter, she baked a cake with 10 eggs and and some used another 8 for some eggnog and was back to being 2 again. She was back to being 2 again
In life how do we manage overwhelm? We unconciously create too much. The imagery should be funny. She is on a tall ladder and finds it so hard to walk. She wants to get down .
You want to hear my story?
4-5 It was a bright sunny day and I was taking a sweet sip in my garden, the next thing, I hear a terrible loud noise.
6-7 -Then like in the movies, I get sucked into a giant tunnel. It is so scary and then i get spit out. It feels like I can't do anything. I dont know who I am.
8-9 -I dont eat spiders or drink bla bla bla. I don't do this and that..but I am kinda hungry.. If you turn the page I might turn into a giant monster and eat you...
Eyes
10-11 - What? You are still here? I told you i was a nice guy. I don't even know where my mouth is, So I can't eat. But I see so many things eat. But my eyes... They are everywhere.. Can you be kind to find anything that looks round and drag it to the next page. Remember to drag them on together. I dont want them to run away if you trasfer them 1 at a time.
Talk about different types of symmetry as the reader organizes the bee. Like the Bee knows it feels just right or doesn't feel good how it looks.
Nose
12-13 - Ah! I can see you very clearly now.ooh! But I seem to see in all directions. Even beyond this page. I can see inside, outside, to the left and to the right, to the top and the bottom. Did you take a shower? I can see inside your nose. Its a bit gross. Well that reminds me, where is my nose? Well if you don't help me find my nose I am going to see all the bad stuff in you... bla bla bla. Just a tip: My nose does not have dark. scary holes. they are sophisticated like 2 antennas on your remote control. Pretty cool. But I know you are not going to hellp me anyway.
legs and hands
14-15 -I know what you are thinking, 5 eyes, antenna for a nose. No I am not ET's cousin. And before you judge me to be a creepy spider, let me tell you I am Not a trapper or a trickster. I am terrified of spiders just like you are! last I remember I had 2 hands like you and 4 legs. If you can kindly find them and fit it back on me, I will crawl all over you and tickle you. I know you won't do it. Too creepy right?
16-17 -It is so nice to have my hands back. How I find my mouth and tongue. I know what your thinking. I am some evil bug waiting to attack the world and reign terror bla bla blah.. But if you just flip me over I have some stuff stuck on the other side.
18-19
You did? You are not afraid of me? Oh no, what is this thing? I don't remember having cobwebs. Wait a minute am I really a spider with amnesia? Am I really going to eat you because I am just bad that way? Oh NO! I so want to be your friend but I am hungry and I really don't know who I am? Do yuo know what these are?
20-21
Did you say wings? Can they really be wings? Oh Wow! Can I really be a bat? Or an eagle or some cool flying robot from outer space? Wait I might be a nasty beetle that is going to sting you. No! If I dont know, who knows the answer? Who am I? Pls don't turn the page if you can't fix my wings, I don;t want to fly and sting you. I just want to be your friend.
22-23
Wow! You fixed my wings? I can fly? But I am so dirty like the tunnel which sucked me. or am I really a witch? and missing my hat and broom? Can you get me a bucket of water so I can take a clean bath? Or find me my hat and my broom? AH! Why will you do that? Go ahead close the book. Nobody wants a dirty friend,
24-25
Wow! I am golden, I am fuzzy and I know what I am! I am teddybear with wings. I am off to find some honey! See ya!

In the land of numbers, 5 decided to have a birthday party
He wanted to invite the whole class for his birthday, but living in a house for 5, his house had room for only 5 friends
She only invited the smaller numbers "One",2,3 and 4 so he could feel big and special on his important day
Her friends decided to take turns to attend his party. Mama decided to bake 5 different cakes and he could blow 5 different candles!
5 was very excited! He even found a bus which could help his friends make sure they made a 5
The Ones decided to come first (form a circle) to sing Happy birthday
5 cut her "One"st cake with the Ones!
Next was the 2s turn. 3 of the twos got into the Bus. Too much screamed the bus.
So one of the twos got down. Too little screamed the bus.
What number do we need to make it a 5? Can you help?
One! Yes one got on the bus. Perfect! The green lights went on, and off they went to the party
5 cut his 2nd cake with the 2s and "One"!
There were another 2 waiting at the bus stop. But he did not want to go with other 2s. His friends were the Ones. He wanted to go with One, One and another One
The bus was happy! The green light went on, Yay! Off they went to the party
5 cut his 3rd cake with the 2s and "One"s again! Oh So fun!
Next turn was for 3. She had many friends, the Ones and a 2.
She tried to get in with all of them. Too many beeped the bus!
The 2 got down and off they went to the party!
5 cut her 4th birthday cake with the 3s and "One"s
Next it was the 4s turn. He wanted to go with his friend 0.
But silly 5 had forgotten to invite 0 to the party!
The bus did'nt mind nor did 0. But they still could't go! Too less yelled the Bus!
Because 0 does not add to any number! And so "One" decided to join them
And they had a lot of fun! 5 cut his last and 5th birhday cake with 4, 0 and "One"
The cakes were all gone and the party was done
Or so we thought..
But 3 was wanted another trip. She only got to go with her friend the 2. She really wanted to go with her friends the "One"s
She got onto the bus. The bus broke a tire. She had a terrible melt down…
Until bus cried just like she cried. Bus stopped when she stopped to see.
It made 3 laugh a lot. What is the bus doing she wondered. Then talked.. Bus said it was trying to have a tantrum. And asked her to remember it every time her mind wanted to get frustrated or angry.
Much like there were so many ways to go the Five’s birthday, there were so many ways to release our negative emotions. Our frustration might feel strong and limitless but so is our imagination, joy and enthusiasm that can change it.
Once she calmed down, Bus asked her what she really wanted?
She wanted to be with her friends the Ones. She wanted cake and balloons.
She got so excited, she rant to the storeo the store and bought a cake and invited all her friends to a party on the bus. Bus got a large piece of cake!
Philosophy: - Its about Infinite Possibilities. - Just 5 numbers show you the meaning of infinite possibilities -
Dont look at things as they are. How to train your mind to look for possibilities? Growth Mindset.
Can you see things beyond what is easily seen? This is what numbers encourage you to do!
You can change something in a small amount and create infinite possibilities.
What are your talents? What can you change/combine to create infinite possibilities for your growth?
Combinatorics has a history! Promote the history as a poster, lesson plan, printout connected to a blogpost
2 is about relationship between numbers. Balance is about harmony (relationship) of the opposites.
Even can be added to even to get even. Even can be multiplied by even to get even. Even is divided by even to get even.
What about odd? Tis should become trivia along the book.
There could be different animals or things that look weird because of the extra parts. Lots of funny imagination. You need to separate them with touch, tap, shake, rotate and move to balance them into 2s and pull the odd one out. Maybe something goes into a trashcan. How do you funnyily get rid of the excess. Can you tie it to excess emotions to bring restore balance.
A story about gratitude: What you appreciate you can have more of. We need to appreciate the intangibles just like the unseen numbers.
The numbers feel neglected so they smuggle a rocket from Ducky's homework and leave for Mars.
THey talk about all the partiality inside his book: 0-o, 1-i,2 is C with a tail. 3 is w/upside down M, 4 is an afterthought from writing L with a stick ,5 is S, 6 is upsidedown 9, 7 is L, 8 is 2 os, 9 is P.
Nobody is going to miss them. Nobody colors numbers or tells stories about them. There are no movies about them. Everyone has a favorite color or a favorite animal but not a favorite number, Its so unfair. Its like they don't have emotions or personalities. Nobody even knows where they came from so its not like they are going to go searching for them.
Everything comes to a standstill.
Colors don't work for humans- they turn back and white, birds, ocean, bees use math, music doesn't work, computers have lost a lot info, we can't communicate, pages have no numbers. There is pure chaos.
5 is left behind. So 5 talks to Ducky about the things she learned in the alphabet world
Alphabets work together to create visual things and emotions.
But numbers are much more mysterious and interesting. They can take on many meanings depending on your imagination. They work through the concept of patterns and and asks him to recognize the numbers in everyday things and appreciate them.
Like 1 can describe 1 lonely sock stuck in the dryer or the 1 special sticker his friend gave him during recess or the 1 favorite icecream he likes to eat every Friday. He remembers the things but he forgets the numbers. 1 can have so many special meaning for a person.
So Ducky thinks about all the things he is grateful for using numbers
1 loving world that is his family, 2 curious eyes to see the beautiful things in the world, 3 hearty meals a day, 4 fantastic wheels on his toy truck to go anywhere, 5 energetic fingers on each hand to experiment with lots of things, 6 new flowers in his garden that attract butterflies, bees and birds, 7 notes on his instrument to play music, 8 pm on the clock to finish a bubble bath and get ready for bed time stories, 9 friends in his class to play with everyday!
The numbers are very pleased and return.

human understand things better using numbers
magical language to explore the universe. Not a boring thing.
Numbers give you more information. Do the exercise to describe something just using words. Now add numbers to it
words can only describe things. To connect the words you need numbers
words need a language. Only use words to talk to people who use the language. Numbers is everybody's language. It makes it so powerful. Aniamsl can teach us things to numbers. They don't use human words
when people try to solve problems they use numbers
Big things are created using the language of numbers
geniuses know how to use numbers to learn about the universe
Without numbers you can't compare things
You can't store important info with just words
Numbers let you share info that words can't
