By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
Define absolute and relative poverty
Describe the spatial distribution of each type of poverty globally.
Discuss some of the impacts of relative poverty in regard to factors of wellbeing such as education, social isolation, economic deprivation, housing & mental health.
There are two main classifications of poverty:
Absolute poverty – is a condition where household income is below a necessary level to maintain basic living standards (food, shelter, housing). This condition makes it possible to compare between different countries and also over time.
Relative poverty – A condition where household income is a certain percentage below median incomes. For example, the threshold for relative poverty could be set at 50% of median incomes (or 60%)
Tasks
Write the definitions of absolute and relative poverty in your books - summarise and/or use your own words.
Draw a mind map with 'relative poverty' at the centre. You will be watching the documentary following some families living in relative poverty in the UK.
Write down all the examples of relative poverty that you observe from the program. You should aim to fill up half a page.
Upload a photo of your work at the end of the lesson.
